Overall Responsibilities and Key Accountabilities

This role has responsibility to lead and develop a team of geoscience professionals to provide high-value geosciences consultancy to deliver sound and optimal Dams, Tailings and Mining geo-solutions to clients. The role also directly supports the Department Manager (Upstream and Midstream Geosciences) to adhere to the overhead budget assigned to the Department and meet the utilization and gross margin targets assigned by the Service Line by focusing on Local Strategy, Dams, Tailings and Mining Geosciences Team Growth, Key Markets (M M and M, Upstream, Oil Sands, Water Dams, Tailings Dams, Tailings Strategies, Front-End/Concept Studies), Clients, People Leadership, Project Execution and Technical Excellence. It further has a responsibility to provide high-value geosciences consultancy to delivery sound and optimal Dams, Tailings and Mining geo-solutions to clients.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Stands in place of the Department Manager when Manager is on leave or unavailable,
  • Identifies new clients and opportunities to pursue leading to future value for all of Worley,
  • Drives collaboration of the Dams, Tailings and Mining Geosciences Team across Worley,
  • Leads and engages in pursuits and proposals, key point of contact for opportunity input and management, manages resource forecasting for team,
  • Reporting key progress. Supports the development and implementation of the Dams, Tailings and Mining Geosciences strategy,
  • Actively participates in identifying talent, assignment of key resources to projects within the team remit, and fostering a high-performance team culture,
  • Develops strong customer relations, acts as project manager or discipline lead/participates in customer facing meetings,
  • Unwavering approach to Health, Safety & wellbeing, and
  • Manages day to day needs, requirements and actions related to the individuals reporting into the Dams, Tailings and Mining Geosciences Team.
People/Staff Responsibilities:
  • Helps manage staff and resource assignments on presently awarded projects, interfacing with staff on workload and progress, and interfacing with project management on performance, workload, and upcoming anticipated work,
  • Helps manage staff and resource assignments for future proposed work by allocating staff and resources,
  • Assists in performing staffing, schedule, and budget build-up in support of discipline input to proposals and RFP responses including staff allocation, rate build-up, hours allocation, cost build-up and sensitivities, and project support schedule,
  • Supports hiring of new personnel including resource identification, interview, recommendation to hire, recommended compensation, start date, need, role, and onboarding,
  • Helps manage geosciences staff day-to-day, attending to needs and issues and supporting problem or conflict resolution the staff may encounter internally or externally, and
  • Assists in managing geosciences staff performance, set group KPIs, monitor performance, conduct staff performance reviews.
Business Responsibilities:
  • Assists to oversee Dams, Tailings and Mining Geosciences Team scopes and delivery on projects to GM and utilization targets,
  • Assists in developing scope and budgets for projects attending to cost, rates, and GM targets,
  • Helps develop and provide/update discipline utilization forecasts per individual and per project for present financial quarter, present half-year, future half-year, remainder of fiscal year, and full calendar year,
  • Assists to develop forecast and budgets for software/training and staff growth/attrition,
  • Supports broader Geosciences DOA when requested, for review and recommendations for approvals facing to both projects and delivery as well as facing to the business, and
  • May act as the point of contact in the Geoscience and broader Advisian and Worley business for offshore geosciences.
Technical/Consulting Responsibilities:
  • Geotechnical/Geologic support in charge of assisting with evaluation of geoscience needs for projects,
  • Interfaces with internal project teams and provides geo-consulting guidance to those teams,
  • Development of SOW and specifications for geotechnical site investigation,
  • Preparation and evaluation of Tenders for geotechnical site investigation,
  • Contractor management, client representative during site investigation,
  • Preparation or management of integrated desktop and field development studies,
  • Familiarity with basic geotechnical engineering principles,
  • Support Worley/Advisian worldwide geoscience operations,
  • Interpretation and reporting on geotechnical / geological data,
  • Travel may be required for projects, client engagement, field survey operations, which may be at 10%-30% per year. However, candidate may elect to not support field programs (office duties only),
  • Location in Calgary AB, Vancouver (BC) is preferrable, remote hybrid work/work from home arrangement possible.
Qualifications

Key Requirements (qualifications, experience, attributes, etc.)
  • Experience of successfully engaging with client project managers, key technical representatives, management, and other key stakeholders,
  • 8 to 15 years or more of experience in Geoscience specializing in Dams, Tailings, Mining geoscience (Geology or Geotechnical Engineering) with progressively increasing scope and demonstrated responsibilities,
  • Demonstrable experience of winning work and delivering successful technical and commercial project outcomes on a variety of projects,
  • Working knowledge of industry standard business support systems (e.g., quality management systems, business systems, sales, proposals),
  • Experience in managing budgets and forecasting, understanding market trends within geoscience markets, and assisting in Dams, Tailings and Mining - specific strategy, and building and maintaining key client relationships,
  • Willingness to develop a team of professional geotechnical engineers and geoscientists of all professional levels to support growth of the Team and discipline,
  • Strong communication skills with ability to develop high performance team culture,
  • Ability to mitigate risks effectively through positive decision making ,
  • Established high technical expertise,
  • Ability to be self-sufficient working along as well as in groups,
  • Good public speaking and public interaction skills,
  • Able to actively participate in meetings,
  • Able to work both within teams and as self-starter/self-manager, and
  • Innovative and motivated towards growth and success of team and self.
