Job Description

Increasing the City of Edmonton's livability, the Animal Care & Control Centre looks out for everyone's safety, including animals on the streets. In this role you will help lost or stray pets in need. Animal Care & Control requires a courteous and professional individual who can provide exceptional customer service and educate the public about responsible pet ownership. Act as the first point of contact for animal intake, release, trap rentals, and pet licencing.
What will you do?

  • Obtain and record all necessary information for stray animals; locate the owners of impounded animals by tracing any identification on the animals
  • Advise owners on reclaiming pets and escort them through the kennels
  • Respond to inquiries, answer calls transferred from 311 and complete CRM tickets
  • Create and maintain paper and electronic records of stray animals
  • Collect fines and fees for animals as specified in the Animal Licensing and Control Bylaw; process various payment transactions; count, reconcile and deposit funds
  • Create and maintain Pet License accounts using POSSE
  • Work in collaboration with Animal Control Officers to impose fines and fees for pets as specified in the Animal Licensing and Control Bylaw
  • Accurately record and maintain animal intake and release information in Shelter Buddy system
  • Educate pet owners on responsible pet ownership and the applicable Municipal Bylaws and Provincial Acts
  • Support clients and vulnerable populations with pets in emotionally difficult situations, including end-of-life care
  • Process exception mail, which requires analysis and correction of pet license accounts
  • Work in collaboration with Supervisor to mentor, coach, train and provide direction to other staff
  • Complete related clerical duties and maintain shared work-spaces/common areas
  • Participate in working committees or project teams on as required basis
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
  • Grade 12 including business subjects related to word and information processing and training in computer applications, or completion of an appropriate certificate program from an approved business school/college
  • 3 years progressively responsible and diversified office experience
Assets:
  • Completion of the Veterinary Medical Assistant program
  • Proficiency with POSSE, SAP/CRM, iNovah and Shelter Buddy
Skills required for success:
  • Demonstrated cash handling experience
  • Experience providing excellent customer service, resolving conflict, and showing tact and compassion in difficult situations
  • Demonstrated supervisory capability
  • Proficient skills in a desktop environment, including the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Google Workspace
  • Excellent and accurate data entry and typing capabilities
  • Demonstrated experience adapting and responding to changing circumstances
  • Knowledge of municipal bylaws on animal licensing, control, and protection
  • Professional experience handling animals is a requirement. Previous sustained exposure to cats and dogs without allergic reaction is required
  • Highly organized and able to prioritize and manage multiple tasks independently

Conditions of Employment:
  • Hire is dependent on a Criminal Records Check (CRC) that is satisfactory to the City of Edmonton, and there may be a cost associated with this requirement

Work Environment:
  • Due to the nature of this work, this position is not eligible for a hybrid work arrangement
  • The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance
  • Weekends required
  • This role works primarily in an indoor setting
  • Required to be exposed to all kinds of animals without any allergic reactions
  • This role requires completion of repetitive and strenuous tasks such as, lifting items like animal carriers, pushing, pulling, reaching, requiring physical stamina and resilience
  • This is a public facing role and requires engagement and interaction with diverse people from various backgrounds with different needs, expectations and emotional states

Salary Range: $27.813 - $34.876 (Hourly); $58,073.540 - $72,821.090 (Annually)
