Position Summary



The Custodian plays a vital role in maintaining a clean, healthy, and safe environment for students, staff, and visitors at the school. This position involves performing a wide range of cleaning, and minor maintenance duties to ensure that classrooms, offices, common areas, and outdoor spaces uphold the highest standards of hygiene and presentation. This position is a direct report to the Director, Finance & Operations (DFO).

Key Responsibilities



The responsibilities include (but not limited to) the following:

Cleaning and Sanitation: Clean whiteboards, Sweep, mop, vacuum, and wash floors in classrooms, hallways, restrooms, gymnasium, cafeterias, offices and any other school facility. Ensure that all surfaces, including desks, windows, and counters, are disinfected and free of dust, dirt, and debris. Restroom Maintenance: Clean and sanitize restrooms, replenish supplies such as soap, paper towels, and toilet tissue, and periodically inspect plumbing fixtures for any leaks or malfunctions. Waste Management: Empty all waste baskets, recycling bins, and outdoor trash containers regularly. Safely dispose of waste in accordance with school and municipal guidelines. ? Minor Repairs: Perform basic maintenance tasks such as changing lightbulbs, tightening loose fixtures, and reporting major repairs to the DFO. Deep Cleaning: Conduct frequent and periodic deep cleaning of the school facilities and items. Event Support: Assist with the setup, breakdown, and clean-up for school events, assemblies, and meetings, including rearranging furniture and equipment as needed. Health and Safety: Follow all safety protocols and procedures, including safe use of cleaning chemicals and equipment. Participate in regular safety drills and training. Security: Monitor facility access, ensure doors and windows are secure after cleaning, and report any suspicious activity to the Director, Finance & Operations. Outdoor and Seasonal Maintenance: Ensure entrances, walkways, playgrounds, parking lots, and surrounding grounds are kept clean and clear of snow, ice, leaves, grass clippings, and other debris throughout the year. Perform essential seasonal tasks such as watering of flowers, shoveling, salting, raking, and mowing the lawn to maintain a safe and well-groomed exterior environment for students, staff, and visitors. Handle the retrieval of playground items from adjourning properties to the school. Identify and implement improvements to the outdoor facilities under the direction of the DFO. Contribute to the overall appearance and safety of the school by regularly inspecting outdoor areas and promptly addressing any maintenance needs as required. Inventory Control: Track cleaning supplies and equipment, notify the Director, Finance & Operations when restocking is required, and maintain proper storage of hazardous materials. Collaboration: Communicate effectively with the school community to coordinate cleaning schedules and address special requests or emergencies. Other Duties as Assigned: Perform additional tasks as directed by the Director, Finance & Operations to support the smooth operation of the school.

Qualifications and Requirements



Education: High school diploma or equivalent preferred. Experience: Previous experience in custodial work, preferably in a school or institutional setting, is an asset but not required. Skills: Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a school environment; attention to detail; good communication skills; ability to take initiative and feedback; basic understanding of cleaning techniques and safe chemical handling. Knowledge of WHMIS is an added advantage. Physical Requirements: Able to stand, walk, bend, climb stairs multiple times, and lift throughout the workday; capable of lifting up to 25 kg (55 lbs) as needed; comfortable working in varied conditions indoors and outdoors. Background Check: Must pass a criminal record check and vulnerable sector screening as required by provincial regulations for school employees. Language: Proficiency in English is required.

Work Schedule



Hours:

The standard work schedule is Monday through Friday, with morning shifts and evening shifts that may vary according to school activities and operational demands. Occasional weekend hours may be required for events or special projects. Custodians are expected to be punctual, reliable, and adaptable to changing needs within the school community.

Flexibility:

Willingness to adjust schedule to meet school needs, including coverage during holidays, inclement weather, or emergencies.
