The mandate of the Kings Historical Society is to preserve and promote the cultural and natural history of Kings County for present and future generations and works toward mandate fulfillment through the operation of the Kings County Museum. The Kings County Museum welcomes hundreds of visitors every year, hosts exhibitions on local history, offers free programming for the community, and provides a space for dynamic and culturally diverse conversation. The Kings County Museum also maintains a collection of over 25,000 artifacts that are important and representative of the history of the area.
This is a summer student position. The role of the curatorial assistant is to help support the Kings County Museum's collection, archives, and exhibitions. The curatorial assistant is responsible for assisting the curator with daily collections maintenance, exhibition design, artifact evaluation and processing, and research projects. The successful candidate will also work on digitizing the museum collection using various photographic and scanning equipment and uploading those digitized copies to online databases. The successful candidate may also undertake special curatorial projects as designated by the curator.
Responsibilities
Assist the curator with the care, documentation, and organization of the museum's artifact and archival collections
Support the development and installation of exhibitions, including layout design and object handling
Evaluate and process new artifacts and archival materials, including cataloguing and condition reporting
Conduct historical research related to Kings County and its communities
Respond to public inquiries and provide historical information to visitors and researchers
Digitize artifacts, photographs, and documents using scanning and photographic equipment
Upload digitized records and associated metadata to the museum's online collections database
Participate in team meetings and contribute to the planning and execution of museum initiatives
Support museum operations, including opening/closing procedures and general upkeep of exhibits and public spaces
Experience
Currently pursuing or holding a degree/diploma in museum studies, history, archival studies, library sciences, or a related discipline would be a strong asset
Experience with collections management, archival research, or museum work is an asset
Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
Excellent communication skills for engaging with visitors and working with team members
Ability to conduct independent research and summarize findings clearly and accurately
Comfortable working both independently and collaboratively
Ability to problem solve and work in a self-directed manner
