Job Description

The Curator, Interpretation communicates the history of Black Loyalists in Nova Scotia and the broader story of the Black Loyalists in North American for individuals, school groups and special interest groups. This is achieved through the delivery of guided tours, educational presentations, and some first-person interpretation. The Curator, Interpretation describes areas of interest in the museum and on the site, assists visitors, answers questions and provides historically accurate information about the experience of the Black Loyalist. This position also works closely with the Curator, Visitor Experience on the development, coordination and delivery of educational tours, presentations and programs.

The Black Loyalist Heritage Society (BLHS) is committed to maintaining a safe work environment and to protecting its employees and guests. The Curator, Interpretation will ensure that all current public health measures are adhered to according to Nova Scotia public health direction.

The Black Loyalist Heritage Centre and Site is a unionized workplace. Employees are represented by the Nova Scotia Government Employees Union (NSGEU), under Local 1783.

Key responsibilities

Interpretation:



Welcome visitors to the Site, provide tourist information, and promote on site services such as the genealogical resources and Gift Shop, while ensuring that guests follow all public health measures and public safety protocols currently in effect per Nova Scotia public health directions.

Conduct guided tours for individuals, special interest groups and schools, ensuring that each visitor's experience at the Black Loyalist Heritage Centre and Site is engaging and meaningful and that all questions are answered accurately.

Provide assistance during public programs and special events.

Lead educational presentations and workshops for school groups on topics related to the Black Loyalists, their history and journey.

Research and deliver specialized interpretation experience when requested by groups.

Perform background reading and research as needed to provide accurate and timely information.

Introduce and show the interactive multimedia exhibited by the museum,

Assist Curator, Visitor Experience with implementation of events and programming.

Provide high quality service at the reception desk.

Collect and record site visitor statistics.

Perform inventory duties including monitoring and ordering stock for gift shop, enter inventory, revenue, quarterly and year-end inventory checks. Seek out new consignment stock and track sales.

Perform general housekeeping duties, tidying the front desk area: sweeping, mopping entrance area, clean museum exhibits, perform bathroom checks.

Assist in other related tasks as required.

Assume additional responsibilities when required as requested by the Executive Director and/or other management team members pursuant to Local 1783 collective agreement.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $21.25 per hour

Expected hours: 35 per week
