Position Summary
Reporting to the
Manager of Healing and Wellness Supports
, the
Culture and Ceremony Coordinator
will demonstrate deep respect for the histories, traditions, and cultures of Indigenous peoples, communities, and nations.
This person carries their own teachings, lived experiences, and life wisdom while honouring the knowledge and experiences of others. They integrate Indigenous values and principles into all programming and support NEWC's mission to reconcile, decolonize, and Indigenize its work.
The Culture and Ceremony Coordinator ensures that ceremonies, cultural programming, and significant events are planned and delivered in a culturally appropriate and good way for staff, participants, and the community.
Key Responsibilities
Coordinate and deliver a variety of Indigenous programming and ceremonies.
Facilitate or invite others to lead
community drum circles
and
traditional drumming
.
Organize and support
medicine picking, sweat lodges, smudging, sacred fires
, and
other ceremonies
.
Provide
cultural and ceremonial support
for families and individuals, including
MMIWG2S+ supports
.
Co-facilitate
healing groups
, offering an Indigenous perspective.
Mentor and guide staff in understanding and applying Indigenous cultural protocols.
Work collaboratively across programs to integrate Indigenous approaches to healing and community wellness.
Participate in planning and delivering culturally grounded events and teachings for staff, participants, and the community.
Qualifications and Experience
2-4+ years' experience working with Indigenous communities.
Recognized by community as having traditional knowledge and understanding of Indigenous spiritual, social, and cultural traditions.
Deep and growing knowledge of
traditional Indigenous teachings
,
ceremonial practices
,
languages
, and
healing methods
(including traditional medicines).
Understanding of the
impacts of colonization
, residential schools, the Sixties Scoop, the child welfare system, and other ongoing colonial systems.
Experience supporting participants impacted by
trauma, problematic substance use, homelessness, and gender-based violence
.
Knowledge of
inner-city and North End resources
and experience working in community-based settings.
Demonstrated ability to apply
cultural humility
,
trauma-informed care
,
harm reduction
, and
pro-choice principles
in all work.
Openness and commitment to working inclusively with
2SLGBTQ+ and gender-diverse communities
.
Familiarity with an Indigenous language is considered an asset.
Excellent communication (oral and written), organizational, and interpersonal skills.
Proven ability to
plan, coordinate, and lead
cultural events and ceremonies.
Strong mentoring and leadership skills; ability to work independently and collaboratively.
Understanding of
mental health as part of holistic health
.
Additional Requirements
Valid Class 5 Driver's License (preferred).
Regular access to a safe and reliable vehicle (preferred).
