Job Description


The purposes of this position are:

The Cultural Interpreter is responsible for coordinating outreach programming for the Curve Lake Cultural Centre and facilitating interpretive activities at the Petroglyphs Provincial Park. This position requires working at the park during the season (May to October) and collaborating with the community, school boards, and institutions throughout the year to teach the history and culture of the Michi Saagiig Anishinaabeg people and promote cultural awareness in the region.

DUTIES:

The incumbent will be responsible for working at the Petroglyphs Provincial Park throughout the season (May to October). During the remainder of the year, the successful candidate will work with the community, school boards and institutions to teach the history and culture of the Michi Saagiig Nation and work to promote cultural awareness throughout the region.

The duties and responsibilities of this position are categorized into five main functions:

  • Outreach Program Coordination:
  • Develop, design, and implement culturally rich outreach programs both virtually and in-person.
  • Coordinate and execute positioning materials for the Cultural Centre, including web, print, and event promotions related to outreach programs.
  • Collaborate with external organizations and institutions to deliver educational and cultural outreach initiatives.
  • Organize tours, awareness sessions, workshops, and other programming to engage diverse audiences.
  • Manage invoicing, payment collection, and reconciliation for services rendered during outreach programs.
  • Cultural Centre Support:
  • Support the Cultural Centre\'s mission and goals through active involvement in cultural initiatives.
  • Work closely with the Cultural Archivist & Engagement Officer to develop work plans and interpret histories accurately.
  • Collaborate with the Tourism Development Officer on projects related to cultural promotion and development.
  • Participate in cultural workshops, contributing to the overall success of the Cultural Centre\'s programs and events.
  • Fostering Growth of the First Nation:
  • Identify and explore potential revenue generation opportunities for the Cultural Centre through outreach efforts.
  • Establish and maintain contacts with external audiences to promote the unique culture of Curve Lake First Nation.
  • Seek new partnership opportunities and avenues to expand the market reach of Curve Lake First Nation\'s cultural initiatives.
  • Assist in organizing community activities/events, such as Powwow, Anishinaabe Giizhigad, and Indigenous Day celebrations.
  • Support cultural tourism initiatives in collaboration with the Petroglyphs Provincial Park and Curve Lake First Nation.
  • Petroglyphs Interpretation:
  • Distribute and interpret information to visitors at the Petroglyphs Provincial Park, ensuring accurate and respectful representation of Curve Lake First Nation\xe2\x80\x99s culture and traditions.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of interpretive programs at the park, integrating Curve Lake culture and practices.
  • Contribute to the organization of events at the park, providing insights and expertise on cultural elements.
  • Train new Curve Lake First Nation staff at the Petroglyphs Provincial Park, ensuring a consistent and high-quality visitor experience.
  • Assist First Nation visitors with ceremonies, demonstrating cultural sensitivity and understanding.
  • Participate in the cleaning and spiritual maintenance of the Petroglyphs site, upholding its sacredness.
  • Coordination and Communication:
  • Collaborate effectively with internal stakeholders, including the Manager of Economic Development, Tourism Development Officer, and other Cultural Centre and Petroglyph Park staff.
  • Participate in committees and advisory circles as directed by the supervisor, contributing to cultural discussions and decision-making processes.
  • Maintain courteous, cooperative, and helpful interactions with the public through fostering a positive image of Curve Lake First Nation within the community.
  • Ensure open lines of communication within the First Nation through promoting effective information flow.
QUALIFICATIONS: (APPLICANTS MUST SHOW NECESSARY PROOF WITH APPLICATION OR WILL BE AUTOMATICALLY SCREENED OUT)

EDUCATION:

The incumbent to this position will meet the minimum requirements that include:
  • A University degree or College Certificate in a field related to research, Indigenous studies, teaching, business administration, marketing, and/or equivalent cultural center, library, or museum experience.

In addition to the basic education requirements of the position, it is beneficial if the incumbent possess the following attributes for their position:
  • Excellent understanding of research techniques and ability to generate various written and verbal reports.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills, with experience in teaching or training environments.
  • Exceptional time management skills, ability to prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines.
  • Possession of reliable transportation for travel to outreach locations and park-related activities.
  • In-depth knowledge of the Petroglyphs Provincial Park and an understanding of its sacred significance to First Nations People and the broader Anishinaabeg Nation.
  • Profound understanding of First Nations people and cultural issues, demonstrating cultural sensitivity.
  • Flexibility to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays, based on program requirements.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Reliability, punctuality, and a high level of personal and professional conduct.
