JOB SUMMARY



The Custodian is responsible for creating a clean, orderly, and safe school environment. The position will require performing routine cleaning and disinfecting as well as maintaining the upkeep and safety of the school and facilities. The Custodian will take on a range of janitorial tasks including, cleaning, waxing and ensuring adequate heat and light. This role also assists school staff in locking or unlocking rooms, moving furniture and equipment and is responsible to maintain the refuse and recycling program.



This position works a split shift, 7:30am - 10:30am and 3:00pm - 7:30pm and is also to be expected to be "On-Call" outside of regular working hours to address emergencies.





JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES



Cleaning and Maintenance:


Vacuuming, sweeping, mopping, waxing, and polishing floors and stairs. Dusting and wiping furniture. Disinfecting washrooms and kitchen areas. Sanitize and clean hard surfaces including doorknobs, light switches, faucet handles and toilet handles, counter tops, sinks, tables, chairs and other furnishings (excluding health equipment). Maintain custodial and laundry rooms in a neat and orderly fashion. Disposal of garbage and disinfecting of garbage containers. + Ensure all chemicals are stored, handled and used according to the Materials Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) requirements identified through WHIMIS, recognizing that safe use leads to a reduced risk of injury.
+ Responsible for inventory management of toilet tissue, towels, soap, etc. - replenishing supplies and storing them neatly once they are delivered in the relevant facilities.
+ Performing minor maintenance tasks such as changing light bulbs or unplugging toilets.
+ Ensuring proper labeling, dilution, and use of cleaning chemicals.
+ Wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required.
+ Perform daily building inspections to ensure cleanliness.

Building Security:


Securing buildings by locking doors, windows and setting alarms. Monitoring building systems and safety equipment. Responding to requests for access to rooms. Comply with the requirements and cleaning protocols of the Health & Safety Inspectors (First Nations Health Authority and Interior Health Authority).

Other Responsibilities:


Moving furniture and equipment. Setting up for events. Responding to inquiries and providing general information to students, staff, and the public. Being aware of and complying with Occupational Health & Safety and WHMIS regulations. Removing snow and ice as needed. Reporting concerns about potential safety issues or building damage. Perform routine minor maintenance of janitorial equipment, including cleaning and laundry equipment. Maintain the refuse and recycling program.



ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES

Keep a daily log of tasks and attendance to be submitted on a weekly basis. Follow a maintenance management schedule. Record and maintain inventories of chemicals, equipment, tools, supplies - reporting any damage or losses. Perform all duties & responsibilities in accordance with the OKIB policies & procedures. All persons employed by the OKIB may be required to assist the Band in providing emergency services. Duties assigned during an emergency may differ from regular duties. Participates in staff meetings and community events as requested. Perform other duties as a key role in the Education Department, which may include student supervision. Performs other duties as required.

Education


Grade 12 or equivalent Current First Aid/CPR certificate (desired) Custodian Certificate WHMIS certificate Valid BC Driver's license, Class 5 and reliable vehicle Combination of education and experience may be considered

Experience


Minimum 1 year of Janitorial or residential cleaning experience Experience operating specialized cleaning and disinfecting equipment (i.e. floor waxer) Minimum 1 year of experience cleaning in a childcare setting Experience working with First Nations communities



CLASSIFICATION/PAY SCALE



$19.00 - $24.00 per hour dependant on education and experience
