AECOM Canada is pleased to announce that our Cultural Heritage team is growing, and we are now seeking a Junior Cultural Heritage Specialist to help us support our team. The AECOM Cultural Resources Department, formed in 2007, provides archaeological, built heritage and Indigenous consultation services to a wide array of public and private sector clients. Our areas of specialty include large, complex projects involving multiple stakeholder communities and often involving multiple levels of jurisdiction. We have a Cultural Heritage core team offering a range of services in built heritage and cultural heritage landscape conservation, planning and management, most notably in the context of environmental assessments and land-use planning and development activities. Our Cultural Heritage team specializes in infrastructure projects and has extensive experience and expertise in supporting large and complex undertakings that can span all aspects of the planning, design, construction and operational phases of the development process.

This role will be based out of one of our Ontario offices: London, Barrie, Richmond Hill, Kitchener, Sudbury, Ottawa, North Bay, Hamilton, Mississauga, or Markham. We are also open to discussing remote working possibilities outside of those office locations. We are seeking an energetic, self-disciplined individual with a passion for heritage conservation who has the capacity to work independently and also in a team environment with our professional Cultural Heritage staff.

Key Responsibilities:

Conduct background research of primary and secondary sources, including a review of historical maps, in order to prepare a written summary of a historical overview of a study area

Review heritage registers and consult with stakeholders in order to identify known cultural heritage resources

Conduct field surveys within Ontario, when necessary, and provide written descriptions, including architectural details, of built heritage resources and cultural heritage landscapes documented in the field

Produce key product documents, including but not limited to Cultural Heritage Report: Existing Conditions and Preliminary Impact Assessments (CHRs; also known as Cultural Heritage Assessment Reports [CHARs]), Cultural Heritage Evaluation Reports (CHERs), Heritage Impact Assessments (HIAs)

Skills/Heritage Related Experience:

Excellent research and organizational skills, including experience with archival and primary source research using a variety of methodologies and data sources, including property searches using OnLand.

Excellent written skills, including proficiency in producing the above-mentioned reports

Familiarity with heritage legislation frameworks and policies, including the Planning Act, Provincial Policy Statement, Ontario Heritage Act including Ontario Regulation 9/06 and 10/06, the Ministry of Citizenship and Multiculturalism (MCM Ontario Heritage Tool Kit, MCM Standards and Guidelines for the Conservation of Provincial Heritage Properties, the Parks Canada Standards & Guidelines for the Conservation of Historic Places in Canada, and municipal Official Plans

Ability to identify potential built heritage resources and cultural heritage landscapes, including the use of the MCM Criteria for Evaluating Potential for Built Heritage Resources and Cultural Heritage Landscapes: A Checklist of the Non-Specialist

An ability to multi-task while working on multiple projects, while producing high-quality deliverables on-time and within budget

Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills to a range of audiences, including senior levels in an organization

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor Degree in a related field of study.
Preferred Qualifications:

Ideally enrolled in or completed a Masters degree in Heritage Planning, Architectural History, Cultural Heritage Studies, Canadian History, or another related discipline is an asset.

Ideally 2+ years of relevant cultural heritage experience

Student membership of Canadian Association of Heritage Professionals (CAHP) is preferred

Proficiency with a variety of computer software, including Microsoft Office. Use of Adobe InDesign is an asset.

Valid Canadian driver\'s license
