Michif Child & Family Services (MCFS) Agency is a mandated child and family services agency with the responsibility to administer and manage culturally appropriate community-based child protection and support services for Metis and Inuit people in Manitoba.
CULTURAL ADVISOR FULL TIME, PERMANENT POSITION - 2 Positions Available
Competition #: MCFS-CA-2022.032 Hours of Work: 7.25 hours per day Classification and Salary: HS1, $22.68 - $26.84 per hour Location: Dauphin, MB
Under the supervision of the Support Supervisor the Cultural Advisor will assist in providing direct and indirect cultural services to children, youth and families as well as to the Agency and staff in order to develop and enhance the cultural service practice of the Agency. Working with the Elder, the Cultural Advisor will develop and deliver locally accepted cultural practices for the Agency in consultation with community Elders and cultural practitioners to facilitate preservation and promotion of traditional practices to enhance positive and strong cultural identity. The Cultural Advisor will provide education and training to Agency staff, communities and external partners regarding cultural values, beliefs, traditions and perspectives on individual, family and community life.
Education and Experience

  • Grade 12 diploma is an asset.
  • Related post-secondary education is an asset; Child & Youth Care certificate, Early Childhood Diploma,
  • Applied Counselling Certificate or other related post-secondary education in social sciences.
  • Current certification in CPR and emergency First Aid is an asset.
  • Demonstrated understanding of M\xc3\xa9tis and/or Inuit culture and communities.
  • 2 years\xe2\x80\x99 experience in working with families/youth in a social service capacity in a cultural aspect developing and delivering cultural programs.
  • Experience in facilitating/conducting supportive groups.
  • Experience and knowledge of Metis culture and relevant practices, events, activities and traditions.
  • Ability to teach and mentor children, youth and others about traditional practices and their significance
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team, with other community and related service organizations to achieve Agency goals and objectives.
  • Experience in facilitating/conducting supportive groups.
  • Experience and knowledge of Metis culture and relevant practices, events, activities and traditions.
  • Ability to teach and mentor children, youth and others about traditional practices and their significance.
  • Strong interpersonal, administrative, organizational and written communication skills
  • Excellent communication skills including written, computer literacy skills using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint), emails, report writing, oral presentation skills, listening and observation skills.
  • Knowledge of childhood development, effects of attachment and trauma, and the intergenerational impact of Residential Schools and Colonization.
  • Ability to maintain a highly professional approach to youth, collaterals and colleagues.
  • Knowledge of and open to learning about Metis and Inuit culture.

Prior to commencing employment the successful applicant will be asked to provide satisfactory results of a Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search, a Child Abuse Registry Check, Prior Contact Check and a Driver\xe2\x80\x99s Abstract upon hire at their own expense. A valid Manitoba driver\xe2\x80\x99s license and the use of a personal vehicle are requisites as travel is required.
