Culinary Assistant

Primary Purpose: To provide efficient and timely support for catering, banquet and conference activities, both in house and across campus.

Nature of Work: This position reports directly to the Catering Operations Coordinator and the Culinary Services Management Team. This position is responsible for ensuring that quality assurance and service standards are met during catering functions and deliveries; including workplace policies such as health and safety and safe alcohol handling and cash reports. Specific duties are assigned daily - the position leads a team of junior staff to complete assigned tasks within established guidelines, referring any more complex issues to the manager. The banquet assistant leads by example, and uses a team, hands on approach to complete tasks with junior staff. The banquet assistant must be able to perform physically demanding work. Thorough attention to detail and customer satisfaction are expected. Other office duties could be assigned by the Culinary Management Team. Weekend and evening work, including variable hours will be required.

Typical Duties: Provides customer service; runs the daily event list to confirm completion and accuracy of orders; expedites and takes out deliveries; coordinates room set up; arranges AV requirements as indicated, including screens, overhead projectors, and microphones; monitors and directs the work of casual, less experienced staff, communicates with the Catering Operations Coordinator regarding contracts, deliveries and banquets; handles cash; creates packing lists; and performs other catering related duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Education: A Food Handler\'s Certificate is required. Must hold and maintain a valid Class 5 Saskatchewan Driver\'s License and an acceptable driving record with 5 years driving experience minimum. Must be bondable.

Experience: This position requires one to three years of experience within a high volume, dynamic, multifaceted hospitality or catering environment. The Banquet Assistant must have a proven customer service record with a strong attention to detail. Formal supervisor training within a hospitality services environment as well as bartending experience would be considered an asset.

Skills: Proven cash handling skills; exceptional customer service; punctuality; demonstrated understanding of the role of Culinary Services on campus; commitment to achieving excellence; effective verbal and written communication and organizational skills, including the ability to interpret catering contracts; ability to set priorities; ability to adapt to an ever-changing environment; ability to perform moderate lifting. Knowledge of the campus layout and ability to drive a cube van is essential.

Salary: The salary range, based on 1.0 FTE, is $20.38 - 23.75 per hour. The starting salary will be commensurate with education and experience.
