Reporting to the Manager of By-law Enforcement or designate, the Crossing Guard is responsible for safely escorting and assisting children and adults across designated roadways and intersections.



Position Responsibilities





Assist members of the public by safely escorting them across the streets as determined by the Town. Ensure the pedestrian crossing or crosswalk signal is activated in order to cross the intersection in a safe manner, watching for road and safety hazards at all times. Maintain a positive public image at all times while on duty, including wearing the required personal protective equipment. Work to educate members of the public on traffic safety regulations and best practices in high traffic areas and promote safe use of pedestrian crossings. Monitor and report any observed problems or safety concerns arising at the assigned crosswalk or pedestrian crossing to the Manager or designate.

Qualifications and Experience





Ontario Secondary School Diploma, or equivalent. Experience working with members of the public, specifically children, and a proven record of reliability is an asset. Ability to follow directions and instructions and work with minimal supervision. Standard First Aid and CPR-C or willingness to become certified, an asset. Good working knowledge of the Highway Traffic Act and applicable Regulations, Ontario Traffic Council School Crossing Guard Guide, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, and WHMIS 2015. Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to work effectively in a team environment and to exhibit courtesy, tact, and diplomacy in dealing with the public, department officials and other members of staff. Ability to adhere to confidentiality requirements at all times. Good verbal communication, customer service, organizational, analytical, problem-solving, judgement, and time management skills.
