Job Title: Instructor, Criminal Justice

Full Time/Part Time: Part-Time

Description of Position: The Criminal Justice department is seeking a qualified candidate to fill a part-time temporary position for the Spring 2024 semester. The following is available to teach:

\xc2\xb7Security (CJUS 1217) on Tuesdays and Thursdays 1630-1820 (single section of 40 students; fully in person)

This course provides a basic level of instruction for private security in accordance with the first component of the Basic Security Training Standards (B.S.T. 1) of the Ministry of the Attorney General for British Columbia Licensing. In addition, the course will focus on the role of private security in the protection of commercial and industrial operations against profit loss. The instructor and guest lecturers will cover loss through theft, fraud, robbery, burglary, vandalism, fire, carelessness, etc.

Candidates may submit applications to teach all or some of the courses listed in this and other job postings. Successful candidates may teach up to 4 sections/courses. Successful candidates MUST be available to teach when the course has been scheduled, as noted above.

Required Qualifications:

  • MA in Criminology or a diploma in a related field to the program instructional areas plus a minimum of ten years of full-time work experience directly related to program instructional areas
  • Demonstrated post-secondary teaching experience
  • Excellent oral and written English communication skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence and a strong commitment to ensuring students are supported throughout their studies
  • Ability and willingness to contribute in department meetings and initiatives
  • Preference given to applicants who have recently taught these courses at a post-secondary institution or who have graduate course work in the area
  • Official documentation of successful completion of a recognized training program in Effective Presentations, or Instructional Techniques, or equivalent (i.e. BC Teaching Certificate, NCCP Coaching Certification, BCIT Effective Presentations, Adult Education Course, etc. \xe2\x80\x93 certificate required or Record of Employment documenting a minimum of 100 instructional hours and level of experience in the delivery of instruction; and
  • Security related employment experience \xe2\x80\x93 hold a Justice Institute of BC \xe2\x80\x98Certificate of Training Completion\xe2\x80\x99 for BST or be eligible for exemption.
  • Applicants must have been employed as a Security Professional, Law Enforcement or Peace Officer for at least one year within the last 5 years. Records of employment and licensing documentation must be supplied.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Maintain currency and strive for excellence in instructional practices and approaches
  • Maintain currency in relevant subject areas, including global and/or local trends, issues, and opportunities
  • Ensure effective use of available class, and maintain appropriate office hours to ensure availability for student consultation
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships
  • As appropriate, actively seek opportunities to integrate students and learning into organizations and/or the community
  • On an as needed basis, participate actively in program design and review
  • Be a positive and active contributor to initiatives at the Criminal Justice Department, Community Programs Division, Faculty of Social Sciences & Community Programs, and the College.
