POSITION DESCRIPTION
POSITION TITLE: Crime Analyst
IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Inspector of Investigative Services
POSITION SUMMARY:
To collect, analyze and disseminate crime data for use by internal and external parties with an emphasis on tactical crime analysis to assist in identifying perpetrators, distinct criminal activity, temporal crime patterns, and community conditions that may be associated with crime and disorder, thereby contributing to effective and efficient police resource deployment and community initiatives.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
Crime Analysis:
Collate and analyze information in order to maintain spreadsheets and databases which assist in the preparation of analytical products such as link charts, timelines, crime maps and statistical reports. Provide operational, tactical and strategic analysis services through the development and presentation of information in various formats such as written assessments, statistical summaries, link charts and crime maps in order to meet specific needs. Provide training on the extraction and compilation of data, analytical tools and methods, or as a subject matter expert.

Disseminate Crime Information:
Prepare, maintain and distribute daily, weekly, and monthly crime reports on select criminal occurrences in accordance with Service policy and present the information in various formats including charts, maps and tables for use by Service personnel. Attend duty line-up, training days, platoon/divisional meetings and other meetings, as approved, to convey information. Provide crime analysis/data and reports in response to requests from Senior Leadership, other Service members, community partners and external agencies, as approved. Provide crime reports/alerts to Information System Services personnel for inclusion on the Service website and the local area network. Liaise with the Public Information Officer to share and disseminate relevant information.

Quality Control:
Monitor the quality of occurrence/report data with respect to adequacy for crime analysis and inform members of deficiencies/needs, as necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • University degree in criminology, planning, geography or another social science with an emphasis on research methods and statistics
  • 3 years of experience in Crime Analysis or comparable intelligence role
  • Training in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) or mapping of statistics
  • 2 to 3 years of experience using statistical analysis software (e.g. SPSS or SAS), GIS software (MapInfo preferred) and Microsoft Office applications
  • Strong analytical, interpersonal, communication (oral and written), organizational, and presentation skills
  • Acute attention to detail
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment involving confidential information and multiple demands
  • Ability to perform well working independently and in a team context
  • Time management methods and techniques to manage multiple priorities
  • Experience conducting research, analyzing, and writing reports to provide guidance or recommendations to decision makers
  • Strong understanding of analytical techniques and qualitative/quantitative methodologies
