Course Description: Microscopy techniques with application to biology and medicine. Practical introduction to optics and microscopy from the standpoint of biomedical research. Discussion of recent literature; hands-on experience. Topics include: optics, contrast techniques, advanced microscopy, and image analysis
Main tasks
The course lecturer will lead lectures and classroom discussions on microscopy fundamentals and advanced techniques. Discussions will center around recent studies using techniques including superresolution fluorescence, multiphoton fluorescence, FRET, optical tweezers, and atomic force microscopy
Teaching Qualification Requirements

  • Hold a Ph.D. in Bioengineering, Biophysics, or Cell Biology. Their thesis research should include hands-on experience with fluorescence microscopy.
  • Have experience in single molecule biophysical techniques and microscopy.
  • Have experience in presenting scientific concepts to undergraduate and graduate school audiences.
  • Be comfortable with leading discussions while encourage broad engagement and mutual respect amongst students, teaching assistants, and instructors.
  • Advance and support McGill University's initiatives to enhance diversity, equity, and inclusion in the classroom and laboratory.
