The Non-Registered Counsellor supports culturally safe, community-based counselling and healing services, focusing on areas within the scope of unregulated practice. This includes wellness counselling, cultural and land-based healing, group facilitation, and client support under the supervision of the Registered Counsellor. The role bridges traditional Indigenous healing modalities with Western counselling approaches, promoting balance, belonging, and holistic wellness.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Supportive Counselling & Early Intervention
Provide supportive counselling for life stress, grief, parenting, coping skills, and wellness goals.
Offer psychoeducation about mental health, stress, and self-care.
Screen clients for issues requiring referral to the Registered Counsellor.
Use culturally safe, strengths-based approaches to guide clients in self-determined healing goals.
Facilitate mindfulness, grounding, and emotional regulation exercises for groups.
Cultural Integration & Traditional Healing
Co-facilitate or assist in ceremonies and workshops with Traditional Wellness Coordinator or Elders.
Help create culturally relevant counselling resources (story-based, land-based, or visual).
Promote reconnection to identity, language, and community values as pathways to wellness.
Document cultural interventions and integrate them into care notes.
Community Engagement & Outreach
Participate in health promotion activities such as Wellness Fairs, school presentations, or seasonal gatherings.
Support mobile wellness visits with the Indigenous Social Navigator.
Facilitate youth and family workshops on coping, boundaries, and communication.
Serve as a cultural bridge, helping clients feel comfortable accessing the clinic.
Education, Program Development & Evaluation
Co-develop workshop materials with the Registered Counsellor.
Collect participant feedback to improve programming.
Contribute to visual wellness education materials (social media, posters, brochures).
Assist in evaluating the accessibility and cultural safety of counselling services.
Supervision, Learning & Professional Growth
Engage in regular clinical supervision with the Registered Counsellor (biweekly minimum).
Maintain a learning portfolio with supervision notes, education records, and reflections.
Attend training in trauma-informed care, ethics, and anti-Indigenous racism response.
Provide documentation of progress toward professional registration.
Participate in reflective practice sessions and mentorship meetings.
Documentation, Ethics & Quality Improvement
Document all client interactions in the EMR under supervision.
Maintain confidentiality and informed consent processes.
Participate in team rounds and quality improvement projects.
Maintain supervision and training records for registration purposes.
Supervision & Accountability Statement
The Non-Registered Counsellor works under the clinical oversight of the Registered Counsellor, who provides mentorship, case consultation, and documentation review. All clinical work is reviewed for quality, safety, and adherence to professional and cultural standards. The Non-Registered Counsellor must seek guidance in complex or high-risk situations. Both positions report operationally to the Clinical Manager.
Job Specifications
Education
Bachelor's degree in psychology, Social Sciences, Social Work, or Indigenous Studies (Master's in progress preferred).
Experience providing counselling, coaching, or wellness support within community or Indigenous health settings.
Knowledge of Indigenous culture, traditional healing, and land-based wellness.
Commitment to pursuing registration (RCC, CCC, or RSW) within five years.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
