Halq'emeylem is the language of this land and of Sto:lo ancestors. The place from where Halq'emeylem (Upriver dialect) originates is Leq'a:mel. The language comes from the land, and it has been this way since time immemorial.

The Fraserview counsellor works as a team with staff and are responsible for providing counseling services to all students.


Qualifications:

A valid BC teaching certificate Master's Degree in Counselling Psychology or School Counselling Successful teaching experience at the elementary school level an asset Successful experience working with a variety of learners with learning/behaviourial and emotional difficulties and other special needs designated students would be an asset Experience with students with ongoing and significant behaviourial challenges - both internalizing and externalizing behaviourial issues, social emotional difficulties, and mental health concerns would be an asset The ability to collect information as to student's behaviourial needs as well as students with complex emotional/learning needs, typically resulting in the designation of students in a behaviour/mental health Category R and H Ability to work on a team providing assessment of behaviourial and emotional issues for elementary-middle aged students. This includes informal assessment of behaviourial issues and as well as formal assessment of behaviour and social skills - including the administration and interpretation of behaviourial assessment instruments The ability to case manage students with complex profiles (Category R and H) - specifically writing Individual Educational Plans (IEP), and facilitation of the Integrated Case Management Process (ICM) would be an asset Knowledge of Integrated Case Management (ICM) and the ability to work with outside agencies regarding behaviourial issues and issues related to social awareness Specific knowledge, strategies and behaviourial interventions to inform and support the School based team as well as the classroom teachers - as to the complexity of student profiles and barriers to their learning from a counselling perspective Experience and ability to relate and connect with high-risk students in a non-judgmental patient and optimistic manner will be an asset Strong relationship and collaboration skills - working with school-based professionals as well as community partners, students and parents would be an asset Experience and proven ability to provide individual counselling support to those students designated in Category R and H as well as to coordinate counselling support with outside agencies Background knowledge of various initiatives towards teaching of "positive behaviour" Experience providing direction to support staff - such as Youth Care Workers to work within the parameters of the student's Behaviour Plan and/or IEP Training in the area of non-violent crisis intervention - has taken non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training or Crisis Prevention and Intervention Training Strong organizational skills Ability in using computers and a variety of technology tools for learning, including but not limited to social networking, search techniques, software knowledge, distributed learning and online curriculum options Knowledge of a wide variety of support agencies for youth in the Mission community, including but not limited to MCFD (SW and CYMH), Fraser Health, Mission Community Services, Fraser House, Child and Youth Crisis Program, Xyolhemeylh, ICY


Job Duties:


Strong commitment to excellence in teaching and demonstrated teaching ability when working with students with diverse learning needs Knowledge of practical strategies to implement in the classroom to foster resilient learners and create a Trauma Sensitive Classroom Strategies to identify emotional and behaviourial difficulties early - to understand obstacles to learning Excellent written and oral communication skills an asset Evidence of personal initiative and strong work ethic Willingness to be involved in professional development with an ongoing commitment to learn and implement new methodologies and strategies Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with students, parents and staff to enhance the school as a learning community Call and chair Integrated Case Management (ICM) meetings as required by the Ministry of Education Create and Implement IEPs/SLPs as required by the Ministry of Education Collaborate and communicate with parents/caregivers and community agencies on an as needed basis To coordinate and implement development of student learning assessment and designated student IEP's

The starting annual salary for this position ranges from $59,711-$109,520, with placement on the range based on length of service, FTE and qualifications in accordance with the Collective Agreement.
