We are looking for a •Legal Counsel, Privacy and Insurance. •
Reporting to the Assistant Vice President & Senior Counsel, you will be a key member of the legal team providing support to our Canadian business units by providing practical and timely legal advice on tactical and strategic business issues, focusing on privacy. You will work closely with a group of legal professionals and business leaders on a range of privacy matters that arise across our businesses, primarily in connection with our insurance business.
You will bring to this role several years of experience in dealing with the following kinds of issues in the context of a large commercial enterprise:
• Interpreting and applying Federal and Provincial private-sector privacy legislation
• Managing and responding to privacy access requests and inquiries from individuals and regulators
• Advising on consent management processes and internal privacy policies and procedures
• Supporting privacy risk management and data incident response efforts
• Drafting, reviewing and negotiating agreements with data-sharing components
• Advising on the privacy implications of data-driven initiatives and emerging technologies, including AI
You will leverage your experience and extensive legal knowledge to play a key role in mitigating risk for the company. Your work in this area will be wide-ranging and will provide the opportunity to develop further expertise in this and other dynamic practice areas. Accountabilities:
• Provide valuable, practical, and independent business-focused legal advice to the company on a wide range of privacy related issues (described above)
• Develop related expertise in insurance products and product development, including contract drafting and interpretation, insurance policy administration, and general legal support for our insurance business
Qualifications and Competencies:
• Law Degree, Member in good standing of a provincial Bar
• 5+ years of relevant legal work experience (law firm or in-house) in privacy related matters
• Knowledge and experience with life and health insurance products an additional asset
• Self-motivated with the ability to work well independently and as part of the legal team and business team
• Strong communication skills with a practical solution-oriented approach
• Demonstrated superior skill in legal drafting, including contracts
• Ability to proactively bring projects to completion
• Highly focused with attention to detail
• Proven analytical and problem-solving skills with experience simplifying and resolving complex problems
• Superior organizational and time management skills with experience handling multiple projects at once
•Given the size and scope of our organization, we have the flexibility for this position to be located in the following head office locations: Toronto, Winnipeg or London. •
