Court Services Division is seeking a legal professional to provide strategic, innovative, and solutions-oriented legal and policy advice to the Assistant Deputy Attorney General (ADAG) and other senior executives. The role involves working on complex legal issues, supporting policy development, and contributing to strategic initiatives across the ministry in all business lines, including criminal, civil, family, and theProvincial Offences Act, as they relate to the justice system and the administration of the courts.

As Counsel and Special Advisor to the ADAG within the Ministry of the Attorney General, you will:



Provide strategic legal advice to senior executives, including the Assistant Deputy Attorney General, on complex legal and policy matters. Lead and support legal analysis related to the administration of the courts, and of current justice system issues. Participate in the development of legislation, regulations, government legal/policy submissions, briefing materials, etc. Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, representing the ministry in consultations and working groups, and foster effective working relationships with justice partners, other divisions, and ministries. Draft and review legal documents, including opinions, memoranda, and briefing materials for senior leadership. Support strategic planning and risk management, offering legal insight to guide decision-making. Support and promote modernization and transformation with solutions-oriented legal advice and a service-oriented delivery lens. Work in a dynamic, high-impact environment, where your legal expertise will help shape public policy and legal frameworks in Ontario.

Membership in good standing as a lawyer with the Law Society of Ontario

Knowledge and Experience



Demonstrated experience effectively building, leading, and managing effective teams that deliver the right results. Demonstrated experience in providing and coordinating legal services that assess legal, policy, operational, and fiscal implications, including risks and mitigation strategies in providing services to senior officials on a diverse range of legal issues. Experience developing legal strategies that support the delivery of effective legal services that fosters continuous improvement. A practical understanding of the justice system processes and court operations, including knowledge and understanding of the role of the judiciary and justice partners, participants, and stakeholders in the justice system. Knowledge of statutes and case law in areas relating to the administration of justice in Ontario to provide legal expertise on a range of complex and high-profile government legal matters. Knowledge of and experience with government decision-making processes, the government's justice policy agenda, and the legislative and regulatory process. Demonstrated commitment to the principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility, and anti-racism.

Judgement and Political Acuity



Exceptional political acuity and judgment to navigate sensitive legal and policy issues with discretion and foresight. Experience advising senior government officials and executives on high-profile or contentious matters. Client and solutions-focused and have demonstrated creativity in anticipating clients' needs and ensuring services provided to the public are diverse and inclusive. You have demonstrated leadership competencies and can quickly gain credibility with colleagues as well as internal and external stakeholders.

Stakeholder Management and Relationship-Building



Strong issues management, collaboration, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to anticipate and respond to emerging challenges. Effective consultation and negotiation skills to influence innovation and change. Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to convey complex legal concepts clearly and persuasively to diverse audiences. Tact, diplomacy, and professionalism in building and maintaining relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including political staff.
