Reporting to the VP of Finance, we are currently seeking a

Cost Accountant

to join our team.

Basic Function

The Cost Accountant is responsible for both general ledger and cost accounting activities within a manufacturing environment. Key duties include preparing journal entries, maintaining supporting schedules and reconciliations, drafting financial statements, and performing detailed cost and margin analysis. This role ensures accurate financial reporting, effective cost control, and provides valuable insights to support management decision-making.

Key Responsibilities

Cost Accounting

Review and maintain accurate LIFO costing and reconcile inventory and WIP accounts. Conduct periodic spot counts of inventory and resolve discrepancies. Validate cost of goods sold (COGS) during month-end close, including redistributions and reclassifications of items and costs. Review and recommend burden rates and adjust labour entries as required. Estimate and maintain warranty costs and reserves, adjusting accruals when appropriate. Perform monthly COS capture in Epicor ERP.

General Ledger

Prepare and post journal entries in the accounting system. Maintain and reconcile balance sheet accounts, making adjustments as needed. Manage fixed asset subledger, record and adjust depreciation, and account for additions/disposals. Calculate and maintain commission schedules. Post payroll to the GL, accrue monthly payroll, and reconcile related expenses. Assist in preparing monthly and annual financial statements.

Analysis & Reporting

Report margins by product line and division. Analyze variances, focusing on inventory adjustments, purchase price variance (PPV), and absorption issues. Prepare draft trial balances for multiple companies. Compile standard monthly management reports (tables, charts, and variance analysis).

Other Duties

Perform bookkeeping functions for the company's Mexican subsidiary. Support management with ad hoc projects and financial analysis.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field. Minimum of 5 years' progressive accounting experience, preferably in manufacturing. Proficiency with ERP/accounting systems (Epicor experience an asset). Strong knowledge of cost accounting and financial reporting in a manufacturing environment. CPA designation (or actively pursuing) considered an asset. Exceptional attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple priorities.
