St. Peter's Abbey has been present on the Canadian Prairies for more than 100 years. It is a member of the American-Cassinese Congregation that includes 20 abbeys in North America. St. Peter's is home to a community of 14 monks who embrace service to God's People through hospitality to guests and, according to their resources, through involvement in parish ministry, education, the press and sustainable agriculture.
Canadian Religious Stewardship (CRS) was established in 2015 by Religious from across Canada to serve their needs. CRS is a National not for profit, charitable civil corporation and a Public Juridic Person of Pontifical Right. CRS provides a vast variety of services including: financial, human resource, civil and canonical law, governance, strategic and operational planning, real estate, day to day operations, and health care to name a few.
The Position
The Corporate Treasurer of St. Peter's Abbey plays a crucial role in guiding the institution's financial management and long-term planning. Reporting to the St. Peter's Abbey Monastic Superior, on site in Muenster, Saskatchewan, the Corporate Treasurer oversees all financial operations, budgeting, and fiscal planning. This position requires a seasoned leader with strong financial acumen, the ability to provide both visionary and practical guidance, and a commitment to the historical mission and values of the Benedictinetradition of St. Peter's Abbey.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Financial Strategy & Planning:
Develop and implement financial strategies that support the Abbey mission and goals.
Collaborate with senior leadership to create long-term financial plans aligned with the Abbey's strategic priorities.
Strategically align financial resources and objectives with the Abbey mission.
Develop initiatives that advance the Abbey's legacy and mission.
Manage change and promote coordination and collaboration across all financial operations.
Budgeting & Reporting:
Prepare and analyze the Abbey budget.
Provide regularly scheduled Abbey financial reports to the Prior, Senior Council, and Chapter.
Create annual budget and financial status of St. Peter's College and projected needs.
Maintain absolute internal transparency and accountability in financial and planning matters.
Communicate financial information verbally and in writing, as required.
Prepare and submit reports to Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and other regulatory bodies as required.
Risk & Compliance:
Identify and assess financial risks and develop strategies to mitigate them.
Establish financial policies and procedures to safeguard institutional assets.
Ensure compliance with all relevant internal financial policies and external reporting requirements.
Oversee appropriate insurance policies and coverage.
Monitor and follow-up on public physical safety requirements campus-wide.
Coordinate financial audits and ensure compliance with external regulatory requirements.
Address annual audit findings and implement necessary improvements.
Capital Assets & Facilities Management:
Oversee the development and management of capital and operating funds.
Plan and monitor the maintenance and upkeep of all buildings.
Oversee the planning of new construction and upgrade of buildings and facilities.
Treasury & Cash Management:
Manage cash flow and liquidity, including the oversight of cash reserves.
Optimize cash management and investment strategies.
Technology & Systems:
Oversee financial systems, recommend and implement improvements as needed.
Stay updated on advancements in financial technology.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree required in Accounting, Finance or related field; MBA, CPA designation strongly preferred.
A minimum of 10 years in progressive financial leadership experience; with some in the non-profit sector.
Significant experience with financial forecasting, budgeting and reporting.
Experience managing audits, compliance, and risk management processes.
Demonstrated management, leadership and supervision capabilities.
Experience overseeing capital projects, facilities, or asset management is an asset.
Knowledge & Skills
Excellent analytical, decision-making and strategic planning skills.
Strong proficiency with financial systems and technology to address complex financial challenges.
Strong organizational, project management, and problem-solving skills.
Understanding of nonprofit and charitable accounting practices and regulatory requirements.
Knowledge of risk management practices and internal controls to safeguard organizational assets.
Ability to work collaboratively with the monks, lay personnel and senior leadership.
High integrity and a commitment to transparency and ethical conduct.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Deep respect for St. Peter's Abbey, its Catholic tradition, and the Benedictine principles that guide it.
Working Conditions
Based in Muenster, this full-time role is primarily onsite during regular business hours, with the flexibility to work from home occasionally.
