The successful candidate will be a lawyer in good standing with the Law Society of British Columbia (or eligible) with between 4-6 years of experience in environmental, indigenous and regulatory law. The Corporate Counsel will work closely with a more senior environmental/regulatory member of the Legal department, as well as with other members of the Legal department, to provide timely and practical legal advice and services.

The successful candidate will join a team which provides a full range of strategic legal advice to clients which operate in a wide range of industries. The ideal candidate is motivated by excellent work and highly engaged colleagues and appreciates superior technology and other support.

Responsibilities:

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Become thoroughly acquainted with Teck\'s environmentally complex mining and processing operations in Canada
  • Provide timely advice and services to operations and senior management with respect to environmental matters
  • Provide timely advice and services to operations and senior management with respect to legal aspects of relations with Indigenous Peoples, including consultation requirements, negotiation and drafting of impact benefit agreements, participation agreements, cooperation protocols and other arrangements with Indigenous groups
  • Provide timely advice and guidance to operations and projects in relation to environmental incidents and ensuing inspections, investigations and enforcement action
  • Provide timely advice and services in relation to permitting strategy and execution
  • Provide timely advice and support to Teck\'s internal audit team
  • Provide training to environmental staff and managers at operations with respect to compliance matters, incident response and investigations
  • Provide counsel and support in relation to environmental issues associated with reorganizations and mergers & acquisitions
  • Review, revise and draft documents including communications with regulators, company policies, and internal communications
  • Monitor changes in relevant legislation and advise with respect to necessary compliance actions and assist with change management
Qualifications:
  • Minimum four to six years of legal experience with responsibilities for environmental, indigenous and regulatory law with exposure to complex industrial operations.
  • Juris Doctor Degree (J.D.)/Bachelor of Laws Degree (LL.B.), and a member in good standing with the Law Society of British Columbia
  • Possess superior communication and drafting skills.
  • Able to thrive in a fast-paced environment and excel at providing timely and decisive advice in evolving situations.
  • An ability to communicate effectively with a varied audience is essential.
