Overview:
Reporting to the Vice-President, Finance and Chief Financial Officer, the Corporate Controller has overall responsibility for controllership functions, provides guidance and assistance to management to ensure conformance of actual results to standards and budgets, and prepares, analyses, and interprets financial results for management to use in decision-making processes. The position evaluates data related to organizational and divisional objectives and prepares and files external reports to satisfy governmental regulatory bodies, stakeholders, financial institutions, customers, and the general public.


The Corporate Controller provides guidance and recommendations for the budgeting and planning of corporate objectives and the strategic framework. The position designs, establishes, and maintains general and cost accounting systems to properly record all corporate financial transactions and records in accordance with application acts, regulations, legislation, and accounting principles and controls.


The position also provides guidance and recommendations on the Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and Payroll functionality to ensure there is adequate control and reporting around the functionality to ensure timely accurate payments. Responsibilities:
  • Develop policies and procedures on accounting, business planning and forecasting, taxes, and financial reporting and performance measurement.
  • Ensure that policies and procedures comply with all applicable laws, rules and regulations, and financial and accounting principles and controls.
  • Review the financial aspects of the acquisition or disposal of property or investments and provide recommendations, if necessary.
  • Participate as a team member and as a leader in inter-disciplinary corporate committees, such as the Investment Committee Working Group, Operations Management Committee, and the Senior Leadership Team.
  • Responsible for preparing, coordinating, and administering the short and long-term financial plans for the corporation.
  • Responsible for establishing and setting policy for allocation of expenses by cost centre, expense category, and major line of business.
  • Initiate and oversee the budgeting process, including formulating guidelines, techniques, reports, and related material.
  • Ensure that the corporate investment portfolio is controlled and monitored in an effective and timely manner.
  • Monitor actual results against budget and provides periodic forecasts for current-year operations for executive management and the Board of Directors.
  • Accountable for coordinating and monitoring risks by senior management and executive and preparing reports for the audit committee of the Board of Directors.
  • Ensure that financial software modules are controlled and monitored in an effective and timely manner.
  • Review the financial progress of the corporation, comparing results with approved plans and budgets.
Qualifications:
  • Completion of a recognized accounting designation (CPA - CA, CMA, CGA)
  • Ten years of related senior-level experience in a computerized, financial environment, including budgeting, large-scale projects, and working effectively with large, inter-disciplinary teams.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, with a history of developing and leading a team.
  • Experience in the insurance industry is an asset.
  • Excellent understanding of the principles of planning, organizing, and control.
  • Knowledge of investment processes and techniques, banking, and cash management.
  • Knowledge of accounting-related information technologies and processes to realize efficiencies.
  • Experience in a consulting-type environment is an asset.
  • Able to work effectively and co-operatively within an interdisciplinary team environment to achieve a common goal.
