Job Summary

The Copyright and Scholarly Communications Office (CSCO), based in the UVic Libraries, plays a key part in the University\'s effort to adapt to evolving needs of faculty and students and to support teaching, research and learning at UVic. The CSCO\'s also has a role in aligning and strengthening the university\'s research priorities and impact by highlighting and addressing critical information policy and scholarly communication issues that impact faculty and graduate student research, including open access, copyright and intellectual property rights, as well as providing concrete pathways to surface and disseminate research produced by the university community.

Reporting to the Coordinator, Copyright Digital Publications and working collaboratively with the CSCO team, this position provides support for the CSCO in advising faculty and staff on the application of UVic\'s copyright requirements and guidelines in a higher education setting and assists with initiatives related to research impact and digital publishing services support (i.e., the creation and dissemination of scholarly and teaching materials), and participates in the implementation of new systems as required. Performs other duties similar in scope and complexity as assigned.

Job Requirements

Experience:

Must have a minimum of six (6) months of recent experience in a similar position, preferably in a post-secondary or institutional environment or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
  • General knowledge and understanding of copyright law and content licensing practices, in Canada, and able to understand and apply policies, procedures, and instructions.
  • Ability to perform complex searches on the web, using library informational tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and organize workload to meet deadlines with changing priorities and periodic interruptions
  • Proficient with record keeping and data entry. Ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with online publishing and social media software software in an academic environment Ability to work effectively independently and in a team environment. Ability to recognize and appreciate the contributions of colleagues. Good written and verbal communication skills required; responding appropriately to inquiries via email, phone or in person and make appropriate referrals to the supervisor.
  • Ability to analyze problems, identify key information and issues and resolve effectively in a timely manner. Models and demonstrates good communication through active listening and appreciative inquiry and open to providing and receiving timely, constructive feedback.
  • Ability to maintain cooperative and productive working relationships and engage in workplace culture.
  • Ability to recognize, respect and work effectively with individuals and groups with diverse perspectives and backgrounds. Takes initiative in learning about language and issues relating to equity and diversity. Demonstrated ability to adapt to new technology and processes.
  • Strong commitment to service and the ability to work effectively in a changing and innovative institutional environment.
Preference will be given to applicants with:
  • Experience with managing queries around rights management (Course Reserves software) and course management software (BrightSpace, etc.)
  • Experience with performing bibliographic searches, both print and online in the UVic Libraries Collection, using Microsoft Office suite, Adobe Acrobat, etc.
Specialized Knowledge/Education:

Secondary school graduation or equivalent.
