Recruitment range: $61,154- $67,421 starting salary determined by the PEA
Performance range: starting salary to max of $79,510 is available through annual performance increases.
Job Summary
The Copyright and Scholarly Communication Office (CSCO) is part of the University of Victoria Libraries. The CSCO\'s role is multifaceted: it provides faculty, staff and students with information required to successfully, navigate copyright issues affecting their learning, teaching, and research activities and priorities, and promotes multi-modal forms of scholarly communication, enabling local control of intellectual assets, and supporting open access journal and book publishing initiatives by making available a web-hosting and publishing services to the University of Victoria\'s associated or affiliated partners (associations/societies). The position requires an understanding of copyright legislation and scholarly publishing trends. The Copyright and Digital Publishing Coordinator (Coordinator) is also responsible for the Issuance of ISBNs (International Standard Book Numbers) and DOIs (Digital Object Identifiers) for UVic publications, upon request.
Reporting to the Head, Copyright and Scholarly Communication (Supervisor), this position will work in consultation with the Supervisor, and acting on their behalf when required. The Coordinator will take on the day-to-day administration, supervision of Copyright Assistants, Reserves Supervisor, and student employees, as well as broad project management support for the CSCO.
This position primarily coordinates copyright clearance for course materials, has oversight over the Course Reserves platform and service, assists in assessing policies and guidelines, as well as advises faculty and staff on relevant copyright legislation, reviewing library database licenses, and guidelines affecting course delivery and other library services (e.g. ILL, digitization projects, etc.). The Coordinator liaises campus wide on copyright and publishing-related issues, as well as regularly contacting off-campus entities such as authors and publishers, when required. The Coordinator engages in extensive research activities, analysis, and tracking and reporting of UVic copyright activities. This positon stays current on case law, policy and best practices, and provides recommendations for change.
This position also works broadly across the staff in the Libraries and with project partners, leads faculty workshops, and acts as one of first points of contact for the campus community. In addition, this position does event coordination, website editing, and FAST accounting reconciliation.
Job Requirements
This position requires an undergraduate degree and a minimum 2 years of experience in copyright clearance and content licensing in an academic environment. In-depth knowledge and understanding of Canadian and US copyright law and practices, in relation to non-profit/education organizations is preferred.
