Job Description


The Faculty of Education, University of Prince Edward Island, invites applications for the part-time term position (18.75 hours per week, to 14-August-2024) of Coordinator of Practice Teaching. The Bachelor of Education programs include: Bachelor of Education, Bachelor of Education (fran\xc3\xa7ais langue seconde), and Certificate in Adult Education.

Reporting directly to the Dean of Education and working as a member of a team, the Coordinator of Practice Teaching supports the Coordinator of the BEd programs (a Faculty member) and establishes, manages, coordinates, and facilitates school placements for students enrolled in the Bachelor of Education programs. The position also plays a key role in the BEd admissions process, and the review and adjudication of BEd awards. This position is involved with both the Bachelor of Education Committee and Faculty of Education Council.

Approximately 200 placements (local, national, and international) are established in each academic year of the program. The coordinator communicates verbally and in writing with school district administrators, principals, and teachers as placements are negotiated and confirmed. The coordinator, working closely with members of the Faculty, will advise, support, supervise, and assess pre-service teachers when necessary, for those experiencing difficulties with practice teaching. Organizing the orientation, placement and monitoring of students participating in international and indigenous placements is also a responsibility of this position.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

As Coordinator of the Practice Teaching duties include:

  • Fostering a positive relationship with the Public Schools Branch and la commission scolaire de langue fran\xc3\xa7aise, schools, and education stakeholders
  • Liaising with education stakeholders to procure mutually effective student practicum placements
  • Coordinating communication with pre-service teachers, practicum advisors, cooperating teachers, and school principals regarding practicum experiences
  • Providing information on the Faculty\'s Bachelor of Education programs to potential students as required
  • Serving on the Bachelor of Education Committee and Faculty of Education Council
  • Collaborating with the Dean in resolving student and/or instructor concerns
  • Participating in faculty meetings and retreats
  • Supporting the practicum teams
  • Reviewing and providing input on BEd award applications
  • Reviewing admissions applications
  • Other duties as required
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • The successful candidate will hold an undergraduate degree and master\'s degree in education, a valid Canadian Teaching Certificate, and several years successful experience as a teacher/administrator
  • Education research experience is considered an asset
  • Strong leadership skills and administrative and coordinating experience are required
  • Experience supervising and mentoring pre-service teachers is considered an advantage, as is a sound knowledge of the school system in Canada and in PEI particularly
  • Superior public relations, communication, and conflict resolution skills are required
  • The ability to deal sensitively and effectively with a wide range of individuals and the ability to maintain a positive presence are essential
  • The successful candidate will have a commitment to the calls for action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the Final Report of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, as well as the ability act with the lens of equity, diversity, and inclusion
  • Applicants must have their own transportation and a valid driver\'s license
  • International travel or work experience will be considered an asset
  • The ability to speak and work in French is also an asset
