Work Arrangements

This regular part-time (21 hours per week) position is available starting September 1, 2023. Regular hours of work are Mondays to Wednesdays, 10am - 6pm. Shift days and times may change depending on the Department\'s need. Occasional evening and/or weekend work may be required. The position is located at the New Westminster campus; however, successful candidate must be available for occasional work at the Coquitlam campus.

The Role

To coordinate the recruitment and training of volunteer tutors and to recruit learners for the Individualized Community Adult Reading Education (I-CARE) Program; matches tutors and learners and provides ongoing support to program participants in consultation with program faculty. Provides exceptional client-centred service on a consistent basis to all stakeholder groups.
Responsibilities

1. Actively recruits tutors and learners and provides information and assistance to program participants and prospective program participants.
a. responds to inquiries about the program from potential students and tutors as well as interested community agencies and service groups;
b. conducts initial interviews and information sessions with potential students, assesses whether the student meets the threshold requirements and if so schedules a student interview and assessment;
c. conducts the interview portion of the student interview and assessment, collects background information on the students (prior educational experiences; work history, goals, etc.);
d. interviews and selects volunteers to participate in tutor training;
e. promotes the ICARE program within the College and to the outside community through various forms of media and public presentations;
f. Presents information, attends meetings and communicates with community agencies to recruit potential students and tutors;
g. advocates on behalf on students with social workers and outside agencies;
h. seeks out learners who would be appropriate for Literacy classroom.

2. Facilitates the ongoing relationship between tutors and learners.
a. matches students with tutors based on established practices;
b. provides ongoing support and supervision to student/tutor pairs;
c. organizes the non-instructional portions of the tutor training workshops and student/tutor workshops;
d. plans and implements methods of acknowledging volunteer tutors and students including social events.

3. Coordinates and produces a variety of publications.
a. produces the monthly student/tutor newsletter and writes the non-instructional sections of the newsletter;
b. coordinates and produces an annual book of student writing;
c. updates the I-CARE website.

4. Performs other related duties.
a. maintains confidential student records and produces statistical information on the program for budget and evaluation purposes;
b. organizes and maintains the collection of literacy resources on both campuses;
c. provides program support to LLPA/Developmental Studies program when required.
To Be Successful in this Role You Will Need

1. Completion of a Diploma-level education from a recognized post-secondary institution or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

2. Excellent interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills including written and verbal fluency in the English language.

3. Intermediate knowledge of and experience Word, Excel, Access, Desktop Publishing, database management and data entry.

4. A demonstrated ability to:

  • manage volunteer programs and recruit, select, train and supervise volunteers;
  • plan, coordinate, organize work, establish priorities and achieve deadlines;
  • work under minimum supervision and be a self-starter;
  • understand the issues around adult literacy;
  • apply a trauma-informed approach to working with adults who face multiple barriers;
  • interact effectively with a diverse population;
  • communicate effectively with tutors and learners individually and in groups;
  • prepare written materials for reports, general distribution or presentations;
  • develop, establish and maintain relationships with students, support groups and agencies;
  • resolve issues independently.
