Overview

The Analytics Data Services department of WorkSafeBC is looking for one highly motivated, innovative, and customer-focused Co-op student, Data Engineer, with a keen interest in data-science, strategic analysis, and program evaluation to join our team to help us strive towards our vision.

As a co-op student, you\'ll contribute to the effectiveness of WorkSafeBC by creating, administering, and delivering data platforms (e.g. data warehouse, data lake) for analytics use.You will also assist in building and maintaining the entire end-to-end data for analytics pipeline including: ingesting data from a variety of data sources, creating datasets for analytics purposes, ensuring quality, security and privacy of analytics-ready data, and optimizing of analytics delivery.

This is a four-month temporary opportunity beginning in May 2023 with a possibility of extending to 8 months.

At WorkSafeBC, we offer a hybrid work model that combines the convenience of working remotely with the dynamism of working in one of our offices, based on the operational needs of the position.

In this role, you\xe2\x80\x99ll work primarily from your B.C. home and at a minimum of once per month in our Richmond office.

What you\'ll do

  • Ensure stability of source applications is not impacted through the data ingestion process
  • Ingest relational, structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data from on premise, cloud, external, document, and other data sources
  • Design logical data models and turn them into physical data structures which turns \xe2\x80\x9chow applications store data\xe2\x80\x9d \xe2\x80\x93 modelling best practices
  • Translate structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data into analytics ready data structures using a variety of data warehousing programming languages and technology (e.g. SQL, Python, Informatica, Talend, etc.)
  • Sequence and schedule ETL scripts by understanding source data and data dependencies
  • Perform quality assurance to ensure data meets entity and attribute quality requirements
  • Proactively look for opportunities to develop datasets to improve the end-to-end delivery of analytics or identification of business insights
  • Monitor platform metrics and health reports
  • Develop data models, data dictionary definitions, and source-to-target mappings
  • Identify and define problems, develop and describe research questions, and develop sound and novel approaches to problem solving and propose recommendations and business solutions.

Your background and experience
  • Enrolled in any of the following majors or specializations: Computer Science, Technology, Engineering, Consulting & Strategic Management, Business Technology Management (
), Business Analytics and Decision Making, Data Science, Finance - , Accounting, Statistics/Mathematics, or Operations Management/Research, or Business Analytics. * Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office: MS Excel, PowerPoint, Access, SharePoint, Visio, Adobe Suite, Outlook.
  • Experience in database development, ETL/Data integration tools (e.g., Hevo, Talend, Stich, data factory, MS Azure Stack, etc.); database and cloud computing design, architectures and data lakes; reporting or statistical tools would be an asset: Power BI, SSRS, SQL, Tableau, Business Objects / SAP - Web Intelligence, Xcelsius, Crystal Reports, SPSS, SAS, Python, R, Microstrategy, Microsoft Reporting Services, Performance Point.
