Position Summary

Co-op Program Advisors support undergraduate engineering students before, during, and after their paid, supervised co-op work terms. Working both independently and collaboratively, Co-op Program Advisors serve as the primary point of contact for students, providing guidance, monitoring progress, and addressing concerns as they arise. Advisors also partner closely with an Employer Relationship Manager to support recruitment and placement activities.
Cooperative education integrates evaluated, credit-bearing work experience into the engineering curriculum. In alignment with Cooperative Education and Work-Integrated Learning Canada (CEWIL) accreditation standards, the program is committed to placing 100% of eligible students in meaningful work terms while ensuring employer partners are supported by prepared, professional students.
Responsibilities:

  • Provides individualized career advising to undergraduate engineering co-op students, including resume and cover letter development, interview preparation, job search strategies, and career planning through one-to-one consultations
  • Collaborates with an Employer Relationship Manager (ERM) to support the co-op recruitment cycle, including job posting review and effective employer engagement
  • Schedules, conducts, and documents approximately 130-160 work term site visits annually (in-person and virtual), including local, national, rural, and remote locations, to assess student progress, support employers, and ensure program and accreditation compliance
  • Coordinates and delivers co-op and career development programming and outreach activities throughout the year, such as the Welcome to Co-op Event, orientations, industry nights, technical talks, and special events
  • Contributes to ongoing Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) and co-op initiatives, including new program offerings, pilots, and service enhancements, in support of student success and program objectives
  • Advises students on University policies and procedures and facilitates referrals to appropriate resources to support academic success, personal well-being, and career development
Qualifications:
Required Qualifications
  • A bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline (education, business, human resources, social sciences, arts, or a related field), or an equivalent combination of education and related experience
  • 2+ years of relevant experience in cooperative education, work-integrated learning (WIL), career development, student advising, or experiential learning environments
  • Demonstrated ability to coach and advise post-secondary students or adult learners, including supporting individuals experiencing academic, workplace, or personal challenges and making appropriate referrals to campus or community resources
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, interpersonal effectiveness, and cross-cultural competence, with an understanding of equity, diversity, and inclusion principles in a post-secondary environment
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with students, employers, faculty, and institutional partners, and to collaborate toward shared goals
  • Strong client-service orientation, with experience balancing the competing needs of multiple stakeholder groups
  • Proven ability to manage and resolve conflict, exercise sound judgement, and recognize when escalation or consultation with others is required
  • High degree of initiative and ability to work independently while contributing as part of a collaborative team
  • Availability to work occasional evenings and to travel throughout Canada as required
Asset Qualifications
  • Knowledge of engineering programs, engineering-industry contexts, or technical workplaces
  • Familiarity with cooperative education or work-integrated learning
  • Experience working in a post-secondary institution or student services environment
  • Experience planning, coordinating, or supporting events and outreach initiatives
