Under the direction of the Associate Director, Employer Relations & Business Development, the incumbent\'s role is to promote Sheridan Co-op programs and students to potential industry partners. Working with a team, the incumbent is responsible for reaching out to identified target markets through which to promote student capabilities and effectively attract new employers to provide meaningful work term experiences for students. The incumbent is responsible for meeting established job development targets and must obtain adequate numbers of program-related jobs from employers.

What You\'ll be Doing

Developing Co-op postings/opportunities for students is an essential prospecting/sales/marketing function for the Co-op process.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Researching the industries in which the students will work and potential industry partners;
  • Actively soliciting program-related job descriptions from employers to be posted through the online Co-op job board via cold calling and significant business development efforts;
  • Probing employers for information on their staffing and skill requirements. Overcoming objections and ensuring timely follow-up communications;
  • Documenting job postings, employer information and appropriate notes in the Co-op database;
  • Networking within identified industries. E.g. Participation in internal and external industry events;
  • Collaborating successfully in a team environment where colleagues work together to ensure a positive outcome for both students and employers;
  • Developing innovative solutions to aid employers to ultimately hire Sheridan students and utilizing other services available through Sheridan;
  • Assisting students to identify learning outcomes in their program of study in order to build on individual capabilities and confidence, overcome employment barriers, and strategize on how to market themselves effectively to potential employers;
  • Communicating regularly with faculty to keep them informed and engaged;
  • Performing other related duties as assigned.
About You

You have a keen understanding of holistic student development and the unique philosophies and theories that inform advising practice in higher education and the ability to apply these frameworks to complex advising encounters.

You have excellent oral and written communication skills, persuasiveness and perseverance.

Your exceptional relationship building skills allow you to network and increase employers hiring our students.

This work is evolving and changing. You demonstrate creative thinking and enjoy exploring new communication tools and approaches.

You enjoy balancing many different tasks, staying organized and like to develop processes or systems to keep things running smoothly.

The successful candidate will also meet the following qualifications:
  • 3-year degree in Business, Computer Science, Arts, Social Science, or a related field
  • 5 years of experience with job development of paid co-op or employment positions, outside sales (including cold calling) and marketing/promotions (equivalencies will be considered)
  • Solid knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office Applications (Word, Excel) along with experience in using database systems
  • Knowledge of occupations, industries, labour market trends and job search strategies
  • Ability to manage the challenges that come with cold calling, including objections and call reluctance
  • Experience working with contact management systems will be consider an asset
