About the Co-op Opportunity
We are seeking a highly motivated co-op student to join our team as
Research Engineer
with a focus on
Machine Learning for Structural Health Monitoring
. The position offers hands-on experience in developing and applying advanced deep learning models for civil infrastructure systems. Specifically, you will contribute to a project aimed at extending recent research on bridge damage localization by implementing and testing Neural Operators to improve model accuracy, generalizability, and data efficiency.
This is an excellent opportunity for a
final-year B.Sc. student, M.Sc. student, or Ph.D. student
in Engineering, Physics, or a related field with a strong interest in machine learning applications, numerical modeling, or data-driven methods.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct literature reviews on the application of physics-informed neural networks for structural analysis
Use transfer learning techniques to improve model performance with limited data
Train and validate neural networks using GPU computing resources
Post-process and interpret results from numerical experiments
Prepare technical reports and contribute to publications
Participate in technical discussions and present findings in team meetings
Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and subject matter experts
Academic & Technical Qualifications
Final-year B.Sc., M.Sc., or Ph.D. student in Engineering, Physics*, or a related field Eligible to work in British Columbia
Demonstrated experience in machine learning, neural networks; familiarity with operator learning is an asset.
Proficiency in Python and modern machine learning libraries, e.g. PyTorch or TensorFlow
Familiarity with LLMs as well as AI-assisted research workflows is an asset
Strong research, writing, and analytical skills
Experience preparing literature reviews or scientific documentation
Non-Technical Qualifications
Effective communication and presentation abilities
Strong collaboration and problem-solving skills
Self-driven with the ability to manage tasks independently
Comfortable working in a dynamic and evolving research environment
