Heartland Housing Foundation serves over 900 households in Fort Saskatchewan & Strathcona County as a not-for-profit housing management body and the administrators for provincially funded rent supplement programs. We operate 12 properties, including affordable lodges, rent-geared-to-income seniors housing, and near market housing for all ages.

Shift times will rotate between: 6:30 am - 3:00 pm and 9:00 am - 5:30 pm 28 hour per week 4 days on 4 days off rotation schedule, including weekends and holidays

Position Overview



We're looking for a key member of our Kitchen Team to support the Chef in preparing meals for HHF residents. This hands-on role involves cooking, baking, and food prep according to established menus and standards. Responsibilities include making baked goods, prepping daily meals, and ensuring cleanliness and hygiene in the kitchen. This role also steps in to lead meal preparation when the Chef is absent.

Responsibilities



Food Preparation and Presentation

Meal and Ingredient Prep:

Wash, peel, cut, cook, plate, and assist with serving meals, ensuring food levels are maintained under the Chef's direction.

Bake According to Meal Plans:

Prepare a variety of high-quality baked goods including bread, cookies, cakes, pastries, and desserts in line with the menu.

Follow and Monitor Menus:

Ensure timely preparation of all meal components by following approved menus, making substitutions only as necessary due to supply.

Lead in Chef's Absence:

Oversee meal preparation and guide staff when the Chef is unavailable to ensure proper recipe execution.

Menu Feedback:

Provide feedback to the Menu Planning Committee to support continuous menu improvement.

Kitchen Management/Administration

Inventory Management:

Monitor and manage food and supply inventory using FIFO practices, and ensure proper storage procedures are followed.

Receive and Store Deliveries:

Check the quality of deliveries and assist in proper rotation and storage of supplies.

Operational Communication:

Participate in staff meetings and maintain open communication with the Chef or Assistant Manager regarding food operations, equipment, and kitchen efficiency.

Health & Safety Compliance:

Help ensure food storage and preparation meet health and safety standards.

Support Service Coordination:

Maintain coordination with kitchen and dining staff to ensure proper food presentation and service.

Grocery Runs:

Occasionally pick up missing or short-delivered items from local stores.
Equipment Maintenance

Maintain and Repair Tools:

Perform minor maintenance and basic repairs on kitchen tools and equipment.

Service and Safety Checks:

Ensure regular servicing and verify that all kitchen tools are safe and operational before use.

Report Defective Equipment:

Promptly report malfunctioning equipment using YARDI, and apply "Out of Order" signage or lockout procedures when necessary.
Health, Safety, and Environmental Stewardship:

Safety Compliance:

Adhere to safety protocols and promote a culture of safety within the organization.

Cleanliness and Hygiene:

Maintain a clean and sanitary work area, adhering to health standards at all times.

Emergency Response:

Respond to emergencies promptly, documenting incidents and ensuring follow-up actions.

Requirements



High School Diploma is preferred, and a qualified Baker or Cook Certification is an asset Three (3) years of previous baking and/or cooking experience in a bakery, hospitality or commercial kitchen, etc. is required Completion of a current and acceptable criminal records check for the vulnerable sector as required by the Protection for Persons in Care Act and the Accommodation Standards and Licensing Act is mandatory Attainment of a Food Safety Certificate is required Basic working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook and internet usage is required First Aid and CPR certification is required or must be attained soon after hire

Working Conditions



Ongoing customer service interaction and communication with staff, site residents and visitors Physical activity involving walking, standing, bending and lifting Exposure to high heat or cold temperatures. (Cooler, freezer, oven and stove) Must be able to lift, push and pull equipment and supplies in accordance with the position's Physical Demands Analysis document Operation of kitchen equipment is required
