PURPOSE OF THE POSITION



The

Cook

is responsible for planning, budgeting, ordering, preparing, and serving nutritious meals and snacks that meet the dietary, developmental, and medical needs of children enrolled in the Centre's programs. This role oversees all aspects of kitchen operations, ensuring facilities are maintained in a clean, safe, and sanitary condition.

WHAT YOU WILL BE ACCOUNTABLE FOR

Plan, order, purchase, and prepare nutritious meals and snacks for up to 28 children (ages 19 months to 6 years) which meets the Canada Food Guide and licensing/health/dietician requirements/Alberta Nutrition Guide. Ensure all supplies required for the daily operation of the kitchen & connection centre. Prepare two snacks and one lunch time meal daily meeting the Canada Food Guide and licensing/health requirements/Alberta Nutrition Guide. Keep current and up to date on knowledge regarding proper nutrition and proper food handling and storage techniques. Store and prepare food in a manner that is safe for consumption and following all regulations. Work with the director, supervisor, educators, and families to ensure dietary restrictions and special cultural food of individual children are supported and alternative food choices supplied. Ensure there is copy of this list always posted in a visible space in the kitchen area, as well as all classrooms. Plan, develop, and post approved weekly menus in advance in both the toddler and preschool classrooms and online program platform, ensuring that they are easily accessible to children, staff, and parents. Ensure all materials and utensils used in the kitchen/by the staff/children are organized and sanitized. Review cooking area often to ensure the maintenance and repair of all equipment to ensure they are in working order. Inspect, clean, and sanitize fridge and freezer spaces to ensure spoiled food is discarded and remaining food items are safe for consumption, checking labels, expiration dates, etc. Prepare food for and assist with Children's Centre and Shelter family functions as requested by the supervisor or Director of Programs. Promote healthy eating by eating with children at mealtimes and involving children in planned and varied cooking nutrition activities - with child support workers and supervisor as a part of the program plan. Ensure an up-to-date bulletin board highlighting children and nutrition, meeting licensing and childcare standards, as well as Alberta Health and Safety requirements. Keep inventory of sanitation supplies for daycare and kitchen and requests orders when needed. Ensure records of all recipes to ensure tracking of ingredients and allergens. Develop and comply with a regular sanitization schedule for ovens, refrigerators, and other appliances and areas. Ensure a safe and healthy environment. Respond to equipment repairs as required. Maintain upkeep on commercial dishwasher and chemicals. Maintain accurate, timely, and complete records for menus, recipes, temperatures, controls, child allergies, etc. Submit accurate timesheet and request for time off in the payroll system. Create and maintain all food-related purchasing, inventory, and turnover records. Submit all receipts and purchase records. Ensure compliance with established budget. Create partnerships with colleagues, departments, and volunteers. Participate in meetings. Conduct self professionally and ethically. Follow policies and procedures and Social Work Code of Ethics to guide practice. Be familiar with the ELLCA program plan and regulations and keep up to date with legislative and ELCCA program plan requirements/changes. Maintain confidentiality, particularly around sensitive issues and situations impacting clients. Maintain required professional certifications and/or registrations. Other additional duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

Journeyman cook required. Food handling certificate is required. Completion of Alberta Food Safety Basics (online). 1 - 3 years of related experience. Demonstrate basic math and counting skills. Knowledge of proper sanitation procedures and food safe guidelines. Previous non-profit organization experience considered an asset. Must have previous experience working with the vulnerable population.

MANDATORY JOB REQUIREMENTS

Clear Police Security & Vulnerable Sector Check maintained. Clear Child Intervention Check maintained. Standard First Aid & CPR/AED Level C. Mon - Fri: 8:30am - 1:30pm. Bending, crouching, and lifting/carrying up to 50 pounds required. Must be able to stand/walk for 5 hours continuously. Ability to use varied appliances. This role is not eligible for Hybrid Remote work.

Pay: $19.00-$21.50 per hour

Expected hours: 25 per week
