Job Description

Our busy restaurant is looking for an experienced, forward-thinking cook who is passionate about food. You will be responsible for preparing meals for 12-60 diners, assigning work in the kitchen and for kitchen inventory management. If you are passionate about garden-to-table practices, sourcing local ingredients, outdoor cooking, creating nutritious meals from scratch and have previous kitchen experience, then we want to hear from you.

The position is part time over the winter on an as-needed basis, going full-time in summer and fall 2021. On-site housing may be available to rent.

Duties:

• Using local ingredients including from our garden when possible
• Purchase food and supplies from vendors approved by the company and monitor inventory
• Help to develop menus and item pricing
• Prepare and plan to execute large groups such as weddings, retreats, and events
• Ensure safety and sanitation practices in the kitchen, including following up to date and changing Covid-19 policies to adhere to present regulations
• Provide excellent service whether for sit down, buffets or groups
• Meet goals for quality and profitability
• Be part of excellent kitchen staff with food prep and presentation
• Follow the budget established by the owners

Requirements:

• 1-2 years experience as a Chef or Cook in a full-service restaurant or equivalent setting
• Excellent communication and organization skills
• Able to work in a fast-paced but friendly environment
• Dedicated to food quality and control
• Strong knowledge of proper food handling and sanitation standards
• Thorough knowledge and experience of seafood/fish, meat/chicken, vegetarian/vegan cooking
• Experience in cooking meals a la carte for 10-60 people and for groups (10-50+ people)
• Enjoy being in a rural area of Cape Breton
• Interest in using fresh ingredients from local suppliers (fruit & vegetables)
• Able to prepare for gluten free, dairy free or other guest dietary preferences
• Facility at accurate management and tracking of food and labor costs, as well as attention to running a profitable line of business
