Reporting to the Culinary Supervisor, the Cook is responsible for the preparation and delivery of meals, as assigned, and to ensure the highest quality of service and experience for Silvera's residents. The Cook is also responsible to act in the capacity of the Culinary Supervisor in their absence.
Responsibilities
Measures out meal ingredients according to standardized or established recipe.
Prepares and delivers food to the culinary standard established by Silvera.
Responsible for the general organization and cleanliness of the kitchen, properly storing items at appropriate temperatures and rotates stock as per established procedures.
Responsible for the kitchen's compliance with all safe food handling procedures to meet the standards of Public Health regulations.
Supports the preparation and delivery of food for all special events. Serves meals in a polite and professional manner.
Receives and controls inventory of all food, non-food supplies, and chemicals in cooperation with the Culinary Supervisor.
Ensures the proper working order of all kitchen equipment.
Reports resident concerns to the Culinary Supervisor or Community Manager.
Participates in and promotes Silvera's Health and Safety program. Reports any unsafe work conditions to the Culinary Supervisor or Community Manager.
Prepare and plate dishes, have input into menu design in conjunction with the Culinary Supervisor.
Adjusts food items to accommodate residents and guests with allergies or specific dietary requirements.
Maintain annual training compliance with regards to TLC training.
Travel between all communities to relieve other Cooks (Floater Cook only).
Other duties as assigned.
Casual Policy
Silvera for Seniors appreciates our Casual employees and continuously plans to evolve and strengthen our workforce by creating a multi-skilled resource pool in support of the excellent work we do. Our casual employment Policy 6.40 states the following bullet points:
Casual employees
must
have availability to work at a
minimum of 4 days per week,
including some weekends.
Casual employees must be willing to work (and be trained) in multiple positions.
Casual employees must be willing to work and support all Silvera Communities in all quadrants of Calgary.
Casual employees must work minimum shifts and must not refuse to take shifts offered without a valid reason and approval. Casual employee's employment, after three refusals to take up shift(s) or for not working any shift(s) within 3 months, may be terminated with Silvera for Seniors due to "abandonment of position".
Casual employees will not have any guaranteed work hours each pay period and will be called to work when needed. The Employee Scheduler will send emails to multiple staff offering same shifts, in order to get shifts covered right away. Shifts are first come first served thus the reason no guaranteed hours.
Casual employees must report any time off request to the Employee Scheduler at least 2 weeks in advance.
Casual employees are not entitled to any benefits other than vacation pay.
Qualifications
Possesses the ability to organize and supervise support staff when necessary.
Demonstrates strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
Maintains a high standard of hygiene and personal appearance.
Able to work independently and as a team member to meet deadlines.
Technical expertise in utilizing cooking tools and kitchen equipment.
Has knowledge of various cooking methods and procedures.
Must be detail oriented, creative, intelligent, and a critical thinker.
Must have at least 2 years of cooking experience, with preference with institutional cooking experience.
Must have at least a General Education Diploma (GED). Post-secondary culinary education or Red Seal considered an asset.

Rotational shift work required, including weekends. All shifts are 8.5 hours and will fall within the range of 6:00am - 6:30pm. Please ensure that all pop-up blockers are turned off when submitting your application.
