Controls Technician
Can-Tech Services is looking for a Controls Technician for one of our reputable Automotive Manufacturing clients in the East Gwillimbury area.
Our client is a premier supplier of advanced suspension products and welded assemblies to the global automotive industry. Equipped with the latest technology in metal stamping (up to 2500 tonne), state-of-the-art robotic welding cells, and automated assembly lines, the 240,000 square foot facility is staffed by expert personnel to manufacture front and rear suspension control arms, links, stabilizer bars and various high value-add assemblies.
The position is a Full-Time and Permanent Position directly with the client.
There is a shift premium included for this position.
Shift: Nights (10PM - 6:10AM)

We are looking for a Controls Engineer who will be responsible for increasing company profitability and improving employee working conditions by studying, recommending, and implementing changes to new and existing manufacturing processes.
Scope of Position:
Provide all departments with safe, well-maintained equipment, while ensuring quality and the ability to meet production requirements in a timely manner.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Design and implement PLC based controls systems for industrial equipment.
  • Configure PLC hardware and programs (ladder, structured text, function blocks).
  • Ability to create and modify PLC programs to optimize system performance or accommodate process changes.
  • Knowledge of FactoryTalk View Studio for developing and maintaining HMI (Human Machine Interface).
  • Program and maintain vision systems and other peripheral devices, ensuring accurate data collection, image processing, and communication with PLC and HMI.
  • Knowledge of safety PLCs (e.g., GuardLogix, PILZ) and safety relay systems (e.g., Allen-Bradley Guardmaster, ABB Vital).
  • Ability to identify and implement process improvements in PLC logic and control strategies to optimize performance and reduce downtime.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot Windows-based control systems, DeviceNet, and Ethernet networks, including RsNetWorx.
  • Expertise in backup and restore procedures for PLCs, HMI projects, and industrial networks to ensure rapid recovery after failures
  • Contribute to machine concepts, design of control software, integration of software with electrical and mechanical systems, and process development.
  • Assist in the development of equipment motor device lists, along with electrical drive and PLC panel design.
  • Install HMI hardware and software as well as developing and maintaining HMI architecture.
  • Assist with equipment breakdowns, work with the maintenance team to trouble shoot and repair equipment in a timely manner.
  • Train engineers, robotic technicians and other maintenance personnel on various controls related applications.
  • Propose and implement ideas to improve and standardize programming methodology of new and existing equipment.
  • Review changes made on asset manager to ensure that there are no risks to safety, quality or production.
  • Maintain up to date documentation of all assembly equipment, this includes issuing work orders and documenting all changes and repairs through MVP.
  • Make recommendations for Preventative Maintenance plans.
  • Research, investigate, and report manufacturing concerns for improvement of overall plant productivity. This includes process cost reductions and implementation of corrective actions to minimize process downtimes and rejects.
  • Complete additional projects as assigned.
  • Develop critical spare parts inventory for the assembly equipment.
  • Assist in the training and development of new hires and apprentices.
Basic Requirements:
  • Degree or Diploma in electrical engineering, or a related field.
  • Electrical license (442A) would be an asset.
  • Minimum of five years' experience in a related field or discipline.
  • Good knowledge of manufacturing processes and systems.
  • Good technical report writing abilities.
  • Proficient in Microsoft applications (i.e. Excel, PowerPoint, Word) and C.A.D.
  • Excellent problem solving techniques and methods.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
