Tikva Housing Society ("THS") is a charitable non-profit housing society that provides access to innovative and affordable housing solutions, primarily for Jewish individuals and families. Tikva Rental Housing Society ("TRHS") is a non-profit housing society that acquires, constructs, holds, supplies, and operates/manages and/or maintains housing accommodations and incidental facilities for low- and moderate-income families and individuals. THS and TRHS shall collectively be known as "the Societies".
Job Purpose
The Controller is a key leadership role responsible for managing and overseeing daily accounting activities. The key areas of responsibility include financial management, internal controls & compliance, leadership & supervision, and departmental collaboration. This position will prepare accurate and timely financial statements and present them to senior management, support the audit and budgeting processes as well as oversees the work of the Finance department. This position reports to the Executive Director and works closely with the Director of Operations and the Finance Committee.
Duties and Responsibilities
Financial Management
Prepares and presents timely financial statements, including Income Statements, Balance Sheets, and Cash Flow Statements.
Oversees and reviews the posting of journal entries and reconciliations while ensuring accuracy and completeness of financial information.
Leads the monthly, quarterly, and annual closing process.
Supports strategic decision-making with financial insights.
Prepares annual operating budgets with the Executive Director and the Finance Committee up to and including the Board of Directors' approval.
Ensures timely management of accounts receivable and accounts payable.
Liaises with external accounting firm, Executive Director, and Treasurer for annual audit and year-end closing procedures.
Files CRA returns in conjunction with external accounting firm, including T2 Corporate Tax Return, T3010 Registered Charity Information Return, and T1044 - Not-For-Profit Information Return.
Internal Controls & Compliance
Identifies and ensures that operational objectives and key results derived from the Strategic Plan are met.
Ensures adherence to internal controls, accounting policies, and procedures.
Conducts ongoing financial and process analysis to determine areas of risk and suggests improvements.
Implements and maintains financial reporting procedures to comply with internal and external reporting deadlines and requirements.
Leadership & Supervision
Supervises finance staff to maintain sound financial practices.
Supports the activities of the Finance Committee and the Treasurer.
Onboards, mentors, and trains finance staff.
Provides performance reviews for finance staff in keeping with the Performance Management Process.
Liaises with the Leadership team on interdepartmental activities.
Engages in continual learning of current trends in financial management, social housing, and other relevant fields.
Qualifications
Manager in a leadership or people-management capacity with experience in internal controls and financial oversight.
Undergraduate degree in accounting, finance, or a related field with a designation as a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA).
Minimum 3-5 years of recent accounting experience, preferably in the non-profit housing or real estate sectors.
Advanced experience working with QuickBooks Online and Office 365.
Must be bondable with a high degree of accountability.
Strong analytical skills in interpreting data and financial trends.
Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively as part of a team.
Excellent organizational, interpersonal, written reports, and oral communication skills.
Knowledge of the Jewish community in British Columbia is an asset.
Remuneration
Full-time salary position earning $85,000 - $95,000 per annum, based on qualifications and experience
