Job description and duties
CMTN acknowledges the six unceded traditional territories its campuses reside on: Haida, Tsimshian (Ts\'msyen), Nisga\'a, Haisla, Gitxsan, Wet\'suwet\'en nations. Coast Mountain College (CMTN), Prince Rupert campus, invites applications for a non-regular Instructor to teach First Nations Fine Arts (FNFA) as outlined below. The appointment will commence January 2, 2024 and end May 31, 2024 (subject to minimum enrolment). Salary will be in accordance with the BCGEU Instructor Scale (range: $36.45 - $52.24 per hour). These courses may be delivered in Kitkatla, travel time to Kitkatla and return will be included if necessary. The Instructor(s) will be responsible for ensuring student success. This includes course preparation, teaching and guiding students, providing feedback, correction, encouragement, and direction. In addition, the instructor will oversee and ensure safety, complete the related administrative, record keeping and monitoring activities as well as other related duties as required. Courses include the following:

  • Introduction to Northwest Coast Art Design and Painting (120 instructional hours)
  • Introduction to Northwest Coast Carving (120 instructional hours)


Qualifications
The successful applicant will be a respected artisan of the Northwest Coast Art with a minimum of 10 years of experience and demonstrated credibility and respect within the First Nations art community. A combination of education, skills, and experience may be considered. Required knowledge/skills (Preference to Freda Diesing graduates) include:
  • Required knowledge and understanding of the Gitxaala Nation, culture and protocols
  • Demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching with the ability to inspire and mentor learners
  • Knowledge and enthusiasm for the best practices in equity, diversity, and inclusion in the classroom
  • Ability to function effectively across cultures, particularly with the Indigenous communities
  • Advanced knowledge in subject area
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal and communication (written & verbal) skills
  • Experience instructing adults in an educational setting (within a Fine Arts program preferred)
