VCC (Vancouver Community College) Continuing Studies is seeking instructors with industry and teaching experience to teach in the Optician Diploma program. Successful candidates will be offered a term contract position, with opportunities for continued instructional assignments.

For a list of courses, please check the program webpage at This position is responsible for teaching students in an assigned field of study using a diverse set of instruction methods and tools.

The position prepares teaching materials, provides assessments of students\' progress, and develops lesson plans/syllabi. It ensures the proper stewardship of college facilities, equipment, and other inventories. The position is also responsible for upholding the College\'s policies and procedures and for participating in meetings and events and on committees.

Candidates must have an advanced knowledge and industry expertise in all areas related to eyeglasses, contact lens, and automated refraction.
Job Duties/Responsibilities

1.Utilize industry knowledge to teach and engage students using a diverse and systematic plan of lectures, presentations, demonstrations, discussion groups, laboratory work, seminars, case studies, and independent or group projects.
2. Develop curriculum, prepare teaching materials, including audio-visual and web-related materials, where appropriate.
3. Effectively communicate with students, in a group or individual setting, using both visual techniques and verbal communication.
4. Prepare, administers, and mark papers, tests, exams, and other assessments to monitor and evaluate students\' progress. Evaluate students\' progress and provide detailed feedback on student performance.
5. Arrange for and supervise independent or group projects, laboratory work or hands-on training.
6. Maintain effective stewardship of classroom facilities, equipment, materials, software, and tools.
7. Adhere to VCC policies and procedures, including being available to students, and maintaining confidentiality of students and information.
8. Participate in departmental and college meetings and events and consult with other college departments as needed.
9. Create a positive learning environment by consistently demonstrating preparedness for class, by motivating students to accomplish educational and personal goals and by providing the opportunity to receive and act on student feedback
10. Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications

  • Completion of an accredited Optician Program
  • Current active registration with the College of Opticians of BC
  • Minimum three years of recent (within the last 5 years) and relevant practice experience (equivalent to full-time)
  • Experience in teaching or mentoring adult learners in classroom and clinical settings is preferred
  • Ability to create an inclusive atmosphere while servicing a diverse student body
  • Evidence of commitment to team and personal professional growth
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills
  • Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc.) and Google Suite
  • Completion of BC Provincial Instructor\'s Diploma or equivalent is strongly recommended
Salary Range - Prorated based on FTE

$45 to $55 per instructional hour.
