Position Overview

The Media, Issues and Outreach unit within the Communications department in the VP Advancement portfolio is currently seeking a Full-time Temporary Relief Content Specialist for a period of approximately 13 months

The Content Specialist is a project manager who develops and manages effective logistics processes that support digital publications including, budget management, liaising with the in-house design and web teams, and manages and assigns work to freelance vendors, including writers, photographers and illustrators associated with arch magazine and UCalgary now. The Content Specialist develops and implements a marketing plan for arch, monitors analytics, and develops content measurement processes and reports. As a member of this team, the Content Specialist reports to the Manager, Outreach, in the Media, Issues and Outreach unit.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Provide project management and professional communications and marketing-generalist skills to support and advance the strategic objectives and activities of arch digital magazine and the Media, Issues and Outreach team
  • Build and implement the marketing strategy for arch as well as manages distribution lists and develops list-building strategies, provides data-tracking, analytics reporting, analysis, and recommendations, which support and enhance arch and UCalgary NOW and build audience and readership
  • Manage an open access editorial calendar, identifying efficiency gaps within the teams content management system, and create new systems to better organize content with the objective of providing greater access to advancement colleagues
  • Create and implement a marketing plan for arch and develop content measurement processes, systems, and analysis specific to arch magazine, and within the broader scope of measurement within the other channels owned by Media, Issues and Outreach
  • Attend content meetings for the Issues, Media and Outreach team to contribute to defining the most appropriate content for channels across the Media, Issues and Outreach-owned channels; ensure content is aligned with institutional priorities and activities Monitor requests as they come into the team to identify and triage content creation opportunities
  • Provide primary support to arch magazine including idea generation, logistics management, promotion, liaising with external and internal contributors and subject matter experts
  • Build monthly newsletter (UCalgary NOW) in Marketo; manage distribution and data list, including subscriptions in Marketo and BBCRM
  • Work with Manager, Outreach and Senior Specialist, Content to establish measurement tools specific to arch magazine; provide ongoing reports and analysis, with strategic recommendations to increase readership
  • Build and maintain relationships with internal stakeholders and coordinate promoting arch content on other institutional and faculty channels.
  • Update alumni and donor engagement staff on content activities on BBCRM
  • Provide secondary support to content creators as needed by assisting with idea generation, scheduling, liaison with faculty communicators and topic experts
  • Provide input as needed for changes to procedures and practices
  • Deal effectively with complex issues, using judgement, common sense, and problem-solving skills
  • Build a network of internal sources as part of your research and information-building process
  • Post all stories to In The News on UCalgary News online
  • Work with team leads and Digital Experience measurement team to identify and institute appropriate metrics
  • Create comprehensive unit reports to share with Advancement leadership and the Media, Issues and Outreach team
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • 5 - 7 years\' experience in communications project management, publishing, marketing, or university advancement
  • Undergraduate degree, diploma or recognized credential in communications, marketing, project management, account management or related field; a combination of education and experience will be considered
  • Exceptional organizational skills with a demonstrated ability to prioritize functions daily; capable of simultaneously managing multiple responsibilities efficiently and effectively
  • Excellent analytical, written, and verbal communications skills
  • Proven exposure to and experience with the creative process and project management challenges
  • Strategic and creative thinker; problem-solver who can think fast on their feet
  • Demonstrated ability to work well independently as well as in an energetic and collaborative team environment
  • Results-oriented and independent, with demonstrated initiative in turning ideas into formalized projects
  • Strong interpersonal skills, passionate about details and quality and able to deliver in a high-performance environment, with multiple projects, stakeholders and deadlines
  • Experience creating and leading complex projects
  • Strong understanding of the University of Calgary and the Advancement portfolio, priorities, and objectives is a definite asset
  • High-level of understanding of the university business and software systems
  • Strong working knowledge of Blackbaud CRM (BBCRM), Marketo and WordPress, photoshop and utilizing image galleries
  • Writing and copy-editing skills are an asset
  • Proven ability to use discretion with confidential material; high level of tact, diplomacy, professionalism and a strong work ethic
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software applications
