Content Designer
for approximately 1 year.
We're looking for a content designer to create clear, accessible content across UCalgary's websites and applications. Whether your background is in UX design, content strategy, information architecture, or writing, you bring a user-first mindset to everything you do.
In this role, you'll design inclusive, purpose-driven content that helps students, staff, alumni, donors, and others navigate complex information and take meaningful action. From mapping journeys and writing interface copy to wireframing pages and testing content performance, you'll help shape world-class digital experiences.
You'll collaborate with designers, developers, marketers, communicators, academics, and other stakeholders across campus to ensure content is aligned, accessible, and effective. If you care deeply about good content and love working in cross-functional teams to drive change, we'd love to meet you.
The content designer creates clear, user-centered content that improves digital experiences across web, mobile, and other applications. More than writing, this role shapes how content is designed, structured, delivered, and optimized to meet user needs and support organizational goals.
Drawing on research, analytics, and best practices, the content designer develops strategies that improve usability, boost engagement, and drive action. Guiding the content design processfrom research and journey mapping to wireframing, prototyping, and testingthey design content that is accessible, consistent, and actionable.
This role plays a vital part in evolving UCalgary's content approachensuring consistency, exploring new formats and technologies, and helping scale content creation across teams.
Summary of Key Responsibilities
(job functions include but are not limited to):
Craft user-centered content that is clear, concise, and tailored for web, mobile, and other applications.
Design wireframes, navigation schemes, interaction, and user flows to visualize and refine content placement.
Conduct research using methodologies such as usability testing, A/B testing, and focus groups to identify pain points, recommend improvements, and refine designs based on user insights.
Write clear, concise microcopy for web and product elements and pages to guide users and enhance usability, while maintaining brand voice. Craft and revise longer-form copy as needed.
Develop and implement content for chatbots, voice search, and other AI-powered conversational interfaces.
Continuously monitor and report on content performance, adjusting strategies and designs as needed based on feedback and analytics.
Develop and implement content strategies that align with business objectives and user needs.
Conduct ongoing content audits to ensure consistency, relevance, and quality across digital platforms.
Collaborate with content architects to create and maintain content taxonomies and labeling systems.
Ensure content adheres to brand guidelines, maintaining a consistent tone, voice, and style across all platforms.
Support and maintain content documentation and governance processes to ensure consistency and clarity.
Lead content discovery and planning, facilitating the right activities to uncover users' content needs, determine business priorities, and align stakeholders.
Deliver recommendations and solutions to a diverse set of partners and stakeholders, including audit findings, concept models, content requirements, etc.
Facilitate content critiques and workshops, advise partners on content execution, and create tools and templates to enable others to create their own great content.
Qualifications / Requirements:
3-5 years of relevant experience in content design or related fields (UX writing, content strategy, information architecture, or web design).
A post-secondary education in visual design, UX design, marketing, communications, or a related field.
Proficiency in designing content across surfaces and channels, including web, applications, and product interfaces.
Experience with user research techniques and tools, including usability testing, user interviews, surveys, A/B testing, and more.
Excellent UX writing, editing, and proofreading skills, with the ability to adapt brand voice, tone, and style for different audiences and platforms.
Skilled in facilitating discussions and workshops, fostering collaboration and consensus to balance user needs with business goals.
Familiarity with content management systems as well as design and testing tools (Figma, Sketch, Miro, Optimal Workshop, etc.).
Proficiency with information architecture, taxonomies, and labeling systems to improve content organization and navigation.
Knowledge of SEO principles and web accessibility standards.
A portfolio showcasing relevant work in content design or UX writing.
Experience scaling content creation and management through a combination of governance and tool sets (e.g., AI) is a plus.
