Position Overview

The Office of Research Services under the VP Research invites applications for a Consultant, Open Science Strategy. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 2 years (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

Working under the broad direction of the Associate Vice-President (Research), the Consultant, Open Science Strategy will lead the development and implementation of an institutional Open Science strategy that supports and advances the goals of Ahead of Tomorrow and broadly aligns with the UNESCO global framework for Open Science. The University of Calgary\'s Open Science strategy will:

  • Amplify research excellence by increasing the quality, reliability, and impact of scientific research at the University of Calgary
  • Enrich student experiences by providing them with opportunities to participate in Open Science activities and learn Open Science skills
  • Embrace innovation by fostering a culture of creativity, collaboration, and experimentation in scientific research
  • Advance equity, diversity, and inclusion by promoting openness, transparency, accessibility, and respect in scientific research
  • Strengthen community connections by engaging with various stakeholders in co-creating and sharing scientific knowledge
  • Enhance institutional sustainability by aligning with the Institutional Sustainability Strategy and reducing waste and duplication in scientific research
This position reports to the Manager, Knowledge Engagement and works closely with other units within the Office of the Vice-President (Research) and the Research Services Office, such as Knowledge Engagement and Research Impact Assessment, International Partnerships, Industry Engagement and the Indigenous Research Support Team, as well as the Research Data Management and Research Security teams. The position also collaborates with other stakeholders across campus (e.g. faculties, departments, institutes, centres, libraries, IT services) and with external partners (e.g. other universities, funders, publishers, repositories, research networks).

The Consultant, Open Science Strategy is expected to work independently and collaboratively in a complex and dynamic environment where relationship building, collaboration and consensus building are required. The position requires a high level of expertise in Open Science principles and practices, as well as excellent communication, facilitation, negotiation, and consultation skills. The position also requires strong project management, data analysis, and reporting skills. The incumbent will have managerial responsibilities for a team of open science and knowledge engagement professionals.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Leadership
  • Conduct an environmental scan of current practices, policies, initiatives, gaps, opportunities, challenges, and trends related to Open Science at the University of Calgary and beyond
  • Develop goals, objectives, strategies, actions, metrics, and timeline for an institutional Open Science strategy that is comprehensive, coherent, collaborative, and aligned with other relevant institutional strategies
  • Coordinate the implementation of the Open Science strategy across campus units, departments, and faculties
  • Leverage change management principles, methods and tools to develop a formal change management strategy that supports adoption of the Open Science strategy
  • Report on the achievements, challenges, and lessons learned from the Open Science strategy to senior leadership, funders, partners, and other stakeholders
  • Contribute to ongoing efforts to reinforce a culture of openness, transparency, accessibility, equity, diversity, and inclusion in scholarly research at the University of Calgary
  • Apply a structured methodology and leading change management activities for the Open Science strategy
Informing Strategic Institutional Directions, Reporting and Evaluation
  • Conduct an environmental scan of current practices, policies, initiatives, gaps, opportunities, challenges and trends related to Open Science at the University of Calgary and beyond
  • Develop objectives, strategies, actions, metrics, and timeline for an institutional Open Science strategy that is comprehensive, coherent, collaborative, and aligned with other relevant institutional strategies
  • Monitor and evaluate the progress, impact, and outcomes of the Open Science strategy using qualitative and quantitative methods
Stakeholder Engagement
  • Establish and maintain positive, trust-based, and effective relationships with internal and external (local, provincial, national, international) stakeholders
  • Identify and build relationships with other positions and service units on campus to coordinate activities and develop a community of practice.
  • Engage with these internal and external stakeholders to solicit input, feedback, ideas, suggestions, best practices, lessons learned, and expectations for Open Science at the University of Calgary
  • Coordinate the implementation of the Open Science strategy across campus units, departments, and Faculties
  • Represent the University of Calgary in relevant networks, communities, and events related to Open Science
  • Advocate for Open Science at local, national, and international levels
Communication and Capacity Building
  • Communicate the Open Science strategy to various audiences using appropriate channels, formats, and terminology
  • Provide guidance, support, training, and resources to faculty members, researchers, students, and staff on various aspects of Open Science, such as open access publishing, open data sharing, open peer review, open source software, open educational resources, open collaboration, open innovation, open evaluation, and open recognition
  • Report on the achievements, challenges, and lessons learned of the Open Science strategy to senior leadership, funders, partners, and other stakeholders
  • Support communication efforts for the Open Science strategy, for internal and external audiences
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • A minimum of a PhD or higher in a relevant field (e.g., science, social science, education, communication) is required.
  • Advanced knowledge of and experience in developing and implementing strategies for open science or related fields (e.g., open access, open data) is preferred.
  • Knowledge of and experience in applying change management principles, methodologies and tools is required.
  • Experience in working with academic or research institutions is preferred.
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal are required.
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement skills are required.
  • Ability to establish and maintain strong relationships is required.
  • Problem solving and root cause identification skills are required.
  • Able to work effectively at all levels in an organization is required.
  • Familiarity with project management approaches, tools and phases of the project lifecycle is preferred.
