Your Opportunity:
The Quality and Safety Lead (QSL) is part of the Patient Safety team within the Integrated Quality Management portfolio (Calgary Zone). This position will lead the Quality Assurance and Patient Safety program for Anesthesia and CSFs. They will review the reported safety concerns, analyze, and prioritize hazards for consideration by the Surgical and Anesthesia Integrated QAC (a collaboration between the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA) and the Calgary Zone Department of Anesthesiology). The QSL will draw on their healthcare background and expert safety knowledge to lead interdisciplinary investigations of quality and safety events and contribute to recommendations for improvement. The QSL will develop guidance for - and promote - best practice in quality improvement and patient safety within CSFs. Through collaboration and consultation with AHS and contracted stakeholders, the QSL will facilitate the implementation of quality improvement initiatives, based upon Quality Assurance recommendations or evidence-based care pathways developed in perioperative care.

Reporting to the Senior Clinical Safety Lead - Calgary Zone, the Quality and Safety Lead (QSL) is pivotal in leading and facilitating aspects of the patient safety program within their assigned clinical area(s), and works as part of a multi-disciplinary, Zone-based team. This position reviews reported safety concerns and provides leadership with respect to analysis and prioritization of the issues that arise. The QSL applies and promotes AHS Just Culture Principles in all of their work activities, while supporting a culture of reporting, learning and flexibility regarding patient safety issues. A primary responsibility of the Quality and Safety Lead is to support their assigned Quality Assurance Committees (QACs). This may include providing support to the Committee chair(s)/members, applying systems thinking principles to the review of clinical adverse events, being the process expert in quality assurance review methodologies, and supporting QAC members to conduct their own quality assurance reviews. Site visits, job observation and other research are often required to ensure that contributing factors to patient harm are well understood. The QSL will regularly collaborate both with their manager and colleagues within the Patient Safety Department, as well as operational Senior Leadership and management at the site/Zone level.
