Muskoka Conservancy is a nature conservation land trust: we protect land in Muskoka for its ecological values. Our success depends on people--volunteers and donors who give their time and resources because they are passionate about protecting Muskoka forever. Both our conservation outcomes and our motivated community of support depend on our staff. Essential to this is our Conservation Technician, who has important roles including field work, supporting volunteers, communications, data entry, research, reporting, and more.
The ideal candidate is a personable, energetic outdoors enthusiast with a passion for making a difference. They will assist our full-time staff as we work together to advance our mission to protect Muskoka forever.
Objectives of this Role
Build and maintain a positive image and reputation for Muskoka Conservancy
Advance the nature conservation mission and values of Muskoka Conservancy
Engage and support volunteers and event participants
Safely assist in execution of outdoor programs
Create and implement a conservation-minded program of your choice
Daily Responsibilities
Support Conservation Manager as directed
Participate in various field activities to support conservation objectives such as, trail work and garbage clean ups
Participate in public outreach events and Nature Quest guided hikes
Assist in Nature Reserve monitoring site visits, as well as potential land acquisition assessment site visits
Support community science projects, including snake monitoring and invasive species management
Support annual fundraising event, including planning, auction support, and communications
lead or support a volunteer activity such as trail maintenance or invasive species management in various weather conditions
lead or support a Nature Quest guided hike
engage with the public about the nature conservation mission at a community event
Contribute photographs and other content for e-bulletins, newsletter, social media
Routine office tasks such as data entry and email and phone communication

Respect for nature
Comfortable working outdoors in typical Muskoka settings, including deep bush, on the water, in wetlands, with biting insects, in various weather conditions
An understanding of health and safety in field and office environments
Enthusiastic willingness to learn, knowledge of local flora and fauna is an asset
Good physical fitness and endurance with ability to hike through rough terrain for up to 5 km with a pack and tools
Graduate of college or university program in environmental science, ecology, biology, forestry, or related field
Cooperative and courteous with people
Able to operate various hand tools
Working Arrangements
Reports to the Conservation Manager
Hours: Part time, 35 hours every two weeks, typical workdays are Monday through Friday, with some early morning starts
Occasional evening and weekend work is required
Work Location: in person is standard, with occasional remote work available
Valid Driver's License and access to a reliable vehicle is required
