, under the direction of the Superintendent and Foreman, is responsible for placing, finishing, curing, protecting, and repairing concrete surfaces in a commercial/institutional construction environment. They ensure a high-quality final product that meets design specifications and project requirements.
Qualifications
Understands and adheres to all safety policies and procedures
Able to read and understand building specifications, blueprints, and other construction documentation
Strong knowledge of concrete mixing, pouring, curing, and finishing techniques
Experience working with concrete pumps or placing booms
Familiar with rebar and mesh installation
Able to operate finishing tools and equipment (power trowel, float, screed, etc.)
Follows direction, and can successfully work independently or as part of a team
Able to lead or train apprentices or less-experienced workers
Strong attention to detail and craftsmanship
Willing to work out of town if/when required
Education/Licenses
Registered Journeyman/woman concrete finisher
Certificate(s) required to operate applicable equipment
Valid driver's license
Able to obtain security clearances if required for project
Experience
Minimum five (5) years' experience as a concrete finisher in the commercial/institutional construction industry
Highly experienced in placing floor slabs, sidewalks, and curbs
Functional Responsibilities
Observe and comply with all health and safety regulations, following safe work practices and procedures at all times
Assist in preparing job sites by setting up and securing forms for curbs, sidewalks, and slabs, using wood, metal, or plastic
Install rebar, wire mesh, or other reinforcement materials as required
Check formwork, foundations, and reinforcing elements before concrete is poured
Pour, level, and smooth concrete using rakes, screeds, trowels (hand and power), and other finishing tools
Identify and resolve issues related to concrete consistency, surface imperfections, and curing challenges
Apply curing compounds and surface treatment as needed
Create textures and finishes to match design requirements (broom, troweled, stamped, exposed aggregate, etc.)
Cut joints with saws to control cracking
Repair and patch existing concrete surfaces
Clean and maintain concrete tools and equipment
Learn and participate in Lean practices and processes, with the goal of continual improvement and reduction of waste
Contribute to, and participate in, the effective use of the Quality Control System
Working Conditions
Construction environment (regularly working near moving mechanical parts/equipment and in outside conditions that include inclement weather, heat and humidity, exposure to dust, asphalt, and noise)
Working with various tools and construction materials
Lifting, pulling or pushing, carrying, and manipulating objects of up to 50 lbs
Walking and standing for long periods of time
Bending, crouching, and crawling
Climbing ladders and working at heights
Use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required (e.g. hard hat, safety boots, etc.)
