POSITION TITLE:COMPUTER SYSTEM SUPPORT







Reports to: Superintendent of Learning in charge of Information Technology



Function/Purpose:



Under the guidance of the Superintendent of Learning, and utilizing broad skills and knowledge to care for the installation, repair and maintenance of all computerized equipment in the Division, Computer System Support employees are responsible to provide assistance to division end users and perform general troubleshooting in order to ensure the effective and efficient use of technology for Division purposes.





Required Education, Knowledge, Qualifications and Experience:



College diploma or university degree in the field of computer science. Certification in Cisco, Microsoft, and Netware is a definite asset. A working knowledge of networks, Windows and Unix based workstations and related peripherals. A minimum of one year experience in the field. Ability to diagnose problems related to information technology and recommend solutions. Valid Class 5 Driver's License.

Ability to organize, exercise patience, and make appropriate decisions. Ability to recognize the condition of the equipment and software with respect to the needs of the users. Exceptional attention to detail. Present a professional attitude and appearance. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all staff, students and the public.

Supervision:



This position does not involve the supervision of staff.





Duties and Responsibilities:



Without restricting the generality of the description above, the Computer System Support employee shall perform such duties and responsibilities as may be assigned including but not restricted to the following:


Conduct oneself in a manner appropriate for an individual employed by a Catholic educational system that provides services to children. Deal tactfully with staff, students, parents and the public. Be knowledgeable and supportive of applicable Board policies and Administrative Procedures. Engage in lifelong learning with respect to training, in-services, team meetings, etc. Organize, carry out and/or assist in all the computer technology areas within the Division under the direction of the supervisor. Assist with Tech Help Desk, identifying and resolving routine hardware and software problems as prioritized by the supervisor. Advise supervisor of instances of theft, breakage, hacking, inappropriate use and other issues. Monitor and analyze network performance across the organization's LANs, WANs and wireless deployments, ensuring stable operation and efficient performance. Assist with implementation of improvements, modifications, installation, and replacement of network infrastructure components. Set up and configure new computer workstations, printers, servers, and other peripherals including applicable system and operating software. Verify the correct operation of computer servers, including scheduled maintenance, verification of properly applied patches, testing of UPS systems and software and backups. Assist with the planning, research, and design of computer-based systems. Perform routine tests to ensure functionality; replace network cabling, jacks, etc. where necessary. Assist in procurement of network hardware and software. Ship (as per warranty) and receive hardware; facilitate removal of hard drives from obsolete equipment. Assist in maintaining an accurate inventory of the Division's IT related equipment and their locations. Assist in assessing, testing, troubleshooting, documenting, and developing maintenance procedures and policies for Division computer-based systems and designing/maintaining user manuals and guidelines. Assist in documentation of system and network updates and other changes made. Perform data backups and disaster recovery operations. Repair and clean computerized equipment as required. Monitor and maintain Division spam filter, ensure all systems are secure and that information available to users is within parameters established by administration. Train end users to operate new or modified programs. Assist in developing and maintaining Division websites. Maintain software licensing compliance and certificate upgrades/renewals as required. Generate statistics, prepare documentation and professional reports on request. Troubleshoot common network problems and assist with office and school internet outages. Work in a team on assigned tasks; perform other duties as required by supervisor.

Confidentiality + The Computer System Support employee is expected to respect the confidential nature of the position by avoiding discussion of any topics that are not formally communicated to the public by the administration of the school or the Division. Information regarding a student, staff member or Board member must not be discussed in public or with any person not authorized to receive that information. Exchange of personal information within the system shall be on a "need to know" basis. Breaching confidentiality is a serious violation of acceptable conduct and is grounds for disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment with the Board. Independence + The employee is expected to take initiative, work independently and as a team member.



Working Jointly with Other Staff on Common Assignments or Tasks
o This position involves working jointly with other staff, teachers, school-based administration, and outside agencies on a daily basis.




Responsibility for Quality of Assigned Work + The employee is responsible for the quality of their work and is expected to seek clarification and direction on any matters of concern.
New appointees will undergo a ten (10) month probationary period.
