General Fusion is seeking a Computational Physicist to join our Applied Physics team. The successful candidate will contribute to the development, analysis, and optimization of advanced simulation models used to support fusion experimentation. This role involves post-processing simulation outputs, extracting and communicating key insights to cross-functional teams, and running parameter scans and optimization studies using in-house reduced-order modeling tools. The Computational Physicist will also perform routine Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) simulations using both commercial and open-source software, compare simulation results with experimental data, and recommend or implement improvements to streamline simulation workflows.

This is a highly technical role that requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, adaptability in a fast-paced R&D environment, and the ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues across a range of technical disciplines.

Responsibilities:

Set up and run Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) simulations using customized Open FOAM solvers for various Magnetized Target Fusion (MTF) machine designs. Develop and maintain advanced post-processing tools to streamline workflows between Open FOAM and other simulation and analysis codes. Compare MHD simulation outputs with experimental data from MTF systems to assess model accuracy and identify areas for improvement. Prepare clear, well-structured technical reports, documentation, and presentations to communicate findings to internal stakeholders.
Other tasks as assigned.

Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in mechanical/aerospace engineering, Engineering Physics, Fluid mechanics, Computational sciences or related field. Minimum 3 years relevant experience, working in an R&D or lab environment. A Background in magnetohydrodynamics, fluid mechanics and heat transfer. Understanding of CFD/MHD principles and the ability to apply them to practical problems. Experience with open-source code such as Open FOAM. Programming skills and a willingness to learn new codes/languages Familiarity with MATLAB, Python or C++ A positive attitude and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment Master's Degree an asset Experience with Linux/Unix preferred. Experience with running/post-processing simulations on medium/large parallel computers preferred. Experience with optimization techniques preferred. Familiarity with experimental methods in fluid mechanics preferred.

The typical hiring range for this position is $90,000 - $110,000. General Fusion considers many factors when determining total compensation, including job-specific or highly specialized knowledge, skills and experience, proficiency, job location and internal equity.
