THE ROLE

Reporting to the Manager, Composite Engineering & Technology, the Composite Manufacturing Engineer is accountable to work with production and engineering teams to initiate, develop and validate new processes to manufacture composite products using advanced technologies and materials. The Composite Manufacturing Engineer will explore novel and innovative manufacturing methods to improve the safety, reliability, and quality of current manufacturing processes to produce composite products at Mattr Infrastructure Technologies.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Design and develop leading-edge thermoset/thermoplastic fiber reinforced composite Structures
  • Complete mechanical designs of test jigs & fixtures
  • Provide technical input and analysis to product design, validation and implementation plans
  • Apply knowledge of materials requirements, performance, and limitations
  • Understand thermoset/thermoplastic composite manufacturing methods and apply knowledge of applicable standard to test and validate thermoset/thermoplastic composite structures
  • Prepare technical reports for design review and approval
  • Make estimates on design time, materials, tooling, costs, and challenges for basic mechanical designs
  • Use FEA software or mathematical models for the design of composite structure and mechanical equipment
  • Prototype, test, and establish failure modes
  • Understand applicable design standards and codes for composite structure, and ensure compliance
  • Optimize the cost and performance of the existing manufacturing process
  • Preparing research project proposals, presentations and troubleshooting as issues arise
  • Create material and proof of concept test plans, specifications, and testing requests
  • Manage testing at authorized third-party laboratories
  • Coordinate and perform trials at manufacturing facilities in Canada/US
  • Critically analyzing test data using statical tools
  • Proactively reporting on testing progress and recommending research actions
  • Working with suppliers for prototyping and testing
  • Identify opportunities for new composite manufacturing technology and manufacturing process improvements
  • Supports Composite Engineering and Technology manager in developing global team strategy, future programs and projects and global Manufacturing Technology activities.
  • Support Process Engineering and QA and operation team at each facility to commercialize new products and manufacturing technology
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor\'s degree/ master\'s degree in mechanical engineering
  • Eligible for EIT or P.Eng. membership with APEGA
  • 3-5 years of related experience in several of the following areas: engineering design, product & process development, R&D
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and deliver R&D projects (focus on design of composite structure and manufacturing process)
  • Previous training and certification for pneumatic design and hydraulics would be an asset.
  • Understanding the fundamentals of thermoset/thermoplastic composite structure design and fabrication, product test and qualification, manufacturing processes
  • Experienced with Solidworks 3D design and simulations
  • Proven leadership skills and strong process knowledge
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to travel 10% as per role requirements
