About Our Opportunity



The Compliance Safety Officer (Fuel) is responsible for safety inspections and audits in an assigned territory, using the Fuel Safety Regulations, Technical Safety Standards Regulations, Technical Safety Fees Regulations, and the Technical Safety General Regulations under the provisions of the Technical Safety Act. The Compliance Safety Officer will also conduct incident investigations to determine cause and/or to prepare for prosecution for non-compliance. Inspections can include a wide variety of specialized equipment using propane, natural gas, compressed natural gas, digester gas, or fuel oil. The Compliance Safety Officer is seen as a subject matter expert regarding the regulated fuels and may be called upon by other inspection agencies, insurance companies, licensed contractors, or other government departments to provide compliance information related to the use of these fuels. May perform other duties as required.
The Compliance Safety Officer reports to the Manager, Pressure Equipment and Fuel Safety, and is supervised by the Program Lead (Chief Inspector), Fuel Safety

Primary Accountabilities



  • Conducts compliance inspections of buildings, facilities, and equipment using the regulated fuels throughout the province
  • Conducts, as lead or as subject matter expert, incident investigations in order to determine the cause.
  • Prepares files and collects evidence for prosecution of non-compliant work or individuals
  • Testifies in court regarding prosecution of non-compliant offences
  • Provides information regarding the regulated fuels and related regulations and codes to internal and external stakeholders as a subject matter expert.


Qualifications and Experience



High School completion and extensive training in gas technology plus 8 years related experience. Must be the holder of, or eligible for, a valid Nova Scotia Gas Technician 1 Fuel Safety license with LP endorsement. Certification and experience as an Oil Heat Systems Technician will be considered an asset. An equivalent combination of training and experience may be acceptable.
To be successful in this role you must have thorough knowledge and comprehension of the applicable propane, natural gas, and fuel oil codes. You have a good general knowledge of all gases and flammable liquids.
You must be able to work both independently and as a member of a team, exhibiting collaborative behaviors, valuing an inclusive workforce. You maintain and build effective stakeholder relationships. You must be comfortable, and able to communicate effectively, in a variety of settings including one-on-one and larger gatherings.
Demonstrated proficiency in various computer programs, (i.e. Microsoft Office including Word, Excel and Outlook) as well as excellent verbal and written communication skills, is required.
We will assess the above qualifications using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Working Conditions



  • Normal work week is 35 hours/week, 7 hours/day
  • May be required to work overtime on occasion


Additional Information



This is a term employment opportunity with anticipated end date of December 31, 2025.
  • Must have a Nova Scotia Gas Technician 1 Fuel Safety license with LP endorsement
  • Must be eligible for appointment as a special constable under the NS Police Act
  • This position requires frequent travel. A valid driver\xe2\x80\x99s license, and daily access to a motor vehicle is required

Pay Grade: TE 29 Salary Range: $2,801.16 - $3,254.83 Bi-Weekly
