POSITION SUMMARY:
The Community Support Counselor - Peer Specialist participates as a member of a multidisciplinary team to provide assessment, treatment, rehabilitation support, skills teaching and crisis intervention treatment to persons with severe and persistent mental illness, helping them to live successfully in the community by demonstrating best practice competencies in psychosocial rehabilitation.
The Community Support Counselor - Peer Specialist acts as a role model, promoting hope and empowerment in clients' recovery and enhances team engagement with clients. Individuals who have had lived experience with both mental illness and addiction are strongly encouraged to apply.
QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS REQUIRED:
Post secondary education - Certificate in Psychosocial Rehabilitation (PSR), or related field or equivalent human services experience
Minimum 3 years front line care taking experience in the community to individuals with severe and persistent mental illness
Completion of Recognized Peer Support Training Program preferred or demonstrated knowledge and experience in core competencies of peer support provision.
Personal lived experience of mental illness and/or addiction Personal lived experience of mental illness and/or addict
Demonstrated knowledge and ability to apply the core values and principles of peer support practice including but not limited to hope and recovery, self-determination, empathetic and mutual relationships, dignity, respect, social inclusion, health and wellness and personal growth.
Demonstrated ability to role-model strong self-care and self-management strategies in recognition of the need for health, personal-growth, and resiliency in peer support work.
Demonstrated knowledge and practiced skills in providing culturally safe and responsive mental health services to clients of diverse ethno-racial and cultural backgrounds is preferred
Familiarity with Mental Health Legislation and Reform and consumer/survivor issues
Knowledge of the Haldimand Norfolk region would be considered an asset
Excellent knowledge and specializing in consumer/provider perspectives in case management and sound knowledge of principles of Psychosocial Rehabilitation
Excellent assessment, crisis intervention, problem solving and organizational skills
Excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills and demonstrated ability to function effectively in a team
Demonstrated ability to be flexible in work assignments
Demonstrated commitment to personal professional development
Sound knowledge and understanding of systems issues, legislation, Mental Health Reform and patient entitlements for the seriously mentally ill
Good family counseling skills and experience with dysfunctional family systems
Basic understanding of psychotropic medications
Knowledge of housing, social, financial, vocational and other community resources
Good working knowledge of the ACT Model is essential
Ability to work effectively under pressure
Working knowledge of MS Word and Outlook
Valid driver's licence, adequate insurance and access to a car
Sound knowledge of serious and persistent major mental illness symptoms and impact on functioning
Good attendance and work record are essential
Knowledge and experience of applying the values and principles of Psychosocial Rehabilitation preferred
Familiarity and understanding of serious mental illness/addiction and mental health systems preferred
ASIST or similar Suicide Intervention Training preferred
Experience/training in group facilitation preferred
